Reception admission and current address

Just beginning to think of school admissions for reception next year for DC and getting a bit anxious what this will look like for us.

Up to Dec last year, we lived in a town, let's call it A. DH works in a town B and had to commute up to 45min - 1h each way. He doesn't have to go every day, but even on the days he intends to stay home, he might need to (or not really need but should) go in on a short notice which was quite annoying. We looked at options for selling our property in town A but that didn't seem sensible (prices went down a lot). We decided to rent our property and rent another one closer to DH's work (town C) with the idea that in a couple of year we might be able to get another mortgage for a property in town C, continue renting, or return to property in town A. A year into renting it's very clear that we will be returning to our property in town A. However we want our daughter to finish her nursery in town C (don't want to move her to different nursery just so that she has to then move again to reception) so we would like to stay at property in town C till July/August next year. Our contract will be rolling by Dec, same for out tenants. Reception applications need to be made by January. Are we even eligible to apply with town's A address on? We kept our address on some things but not utility bills etc. Town A is oversubscribed for primary schools so if we had to apply to move our daughter that might not go in our favour at all. Do we ring admissions to explain the situation? Will they be able to accept the application? All insights appreciated.

You need to apply under your current address. If you are adamant you don’t want to move nursery, you could commute from A for the last 6 months.

You’ve got almost zero chance of an oversubscribed school otherwise.

Have a look at your LAs website. I’ve just applied for DS and I’m sure it said on there what to do if you were moving by x time. I didn’t read it fully as it didn’t apply but it would be worth checking there first and giving them a call if it doesn’t say anything

If you own the property in town A you might be able to apply with evidence of an eviction notice for your tenants stating you intend to return to the property before school starts. That’s how it works in my LA:

This would be ideal! I will enquire with the local authority.
