When do you meet your DC's teacher?

My DC started Y4 this week and we've not had any interactions with her teacher outside of chaotic pick up which is still done covid style - Parents waiting outside the school while teacher stands behind fence sending out each child.
Apart from an A4 piece of paper with new class teacher, class name and a few paragraphs, given out at the end of Y3 when they had a meet the teacher morning, which we subsequently lost over summer, woops! Nothing...
Is this normal?

My expectations of school experiences is getting lower and lower!!

We've had no letters or other communication from the school so far.
Been told by my DC when pe is but that's all.
Just wondering what other schools are doing to get a gauge of what's normal!
Feeling a bit in the dark so far!

I don't bother with meet the teacher. All I Need to know is what day is pe and what day swimming .

PuttingDownRoots · 08/09/2023 14:02

I have absolutely no idea who my child's teacher is... I've never seen them. I know their name but thats it.

Shes on Yr6.

Halo8 · 08/09/2023 14:04

Parents’ evening. Until that point I couldn’t pick them out of a lineup.

Newuser75 · 08/09/2023 14:05

We have had a parents information evening where you get to meet the teachers. After that it's parents evening.

cakecoffeecakecoffee · 08/09/2023 14:23

We’ve only really met at parents evenings, and then had updates through the Dojo app.

sunshineandshowers40 · 08/09/2023 14:37

We have not had a meet a teacher/ information evening, I don't think we meet the teacher till parents evening. DC is Y6, his teacher taught one of my older DC so I have meet her before.

FijiSea · 08/09/2023 14:42

Only ever meet them at parents evening and am fine with that.
Our school is similar in that parents just wait around and teachers send out the little ones one by one when they see the parent waiting ( this only applies to P1 P2 pupils at our school ) . Older kids I don’t have a clue what their teacher looks like as they just all come out one door in a scrum
I’m same as a previous poster , as long as I know the teachers name in case I need to call school etc and the days of P. E then I’m good.

We had a meet the teacher evening in July before they broke up when we met the new teacher and have another one in a couple of weeks' time. The teachers are always available to chat after school too. I don't feel like it's worth talking to them yet as they don't know my children very well, in a couple of weeks they will have more to discuss.

CyberCritical · 08/09/2023 14:49

Parents evening and see her at drop off/pick up. We did get a handout at the end of last year with a photo and a bit of an intro from the teacher on who she is, where the classroom is and such like, then an intro message on Dojo just before the start of this term from her about how excited she is to get to know the kids.

QuietDragon · 08/09/2023 15:38

Open evening at the end of the summer term. It's after school on 'meet the teacher' day, so you can look through books/ chat to current teacher about their school report and then take a wonder to find their new classroom and say hi to the new teacher.

Bluevelvetsofa · 08/09/2023 16:41

What were you hoping for? It’s too early to discuss progress just yet, but you’d know whether your child is settling into the year I imagine.

You did have something you said, in the summer, which you lost and a meet the teacher at the end of the summer term. Unless there’s something you have a concern about, I’d give it a bit longer and then get in contact if you aren’t getting what you need.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 08/09/2023 16:56

We have had a parents "meet the teachers" presentation when the whole year group goes in for a presentation. Then for a 1-1 it will be parents evening in December time.

Tellerium · 08/09/2023 16:58

We had a Parents information session in the summer term. Other than that we just see her at pick up time. We have had information booklets and timetables sent via email.

If we did want to see her or the head we would be able to email and make an appointment but it’s a very small school so it’s easier, fewer potential appointments to accommodate!

Peasinthefreezer · 08/09/2023 17:05

Year 6 parent, the teacher was greeting the class and any parents on the first morning drop-off.

We have a meet the teacher meeting next week, where they will chat about the curriculum for the term as well as an opportunity to chat with the teacher.

Ongoing - I know he or the TA will be in the playground everyday after school if any parents needs to chat. After that it will be parents evening sometime after half term.

The children in England have had four days max of school. Why do you need to meet the teacher?

CupOfCoffeePlease · 08/09/2023 17:12

This is really normal. You say that's covid style... but what else we're you expecting?! Yr 5 and 6 here they are just let loose so don't even point the kid in the right direction as they do yr 4 here (just brief check a parent is there that's all yr 4)

The primary does tend to have a "welcome to yr x" evening at the beginning of term but as there's 3 teachers in each Yr you may not meet your child's teacher. It usually contains info about pe day and homework and to be honest by yr 4 I reckon only about 1/4 of parents even go as its all on the sheet!

Sandysandwich · 08/09/2023 17:13

The 1st time I have met any of my childrens teachers is at parents evening, except for 1 who I met at a tesco in about November and ds was very excited to point out and 1 who I never met at all as she was off during the only parents evening.

DinnaeFashYersel · 08/09/2023 17:40

2-3 times a year at parents night is all that's needed unless your child is struggling or having problems.

RoseslnTheHospital · 08/09/2023 17:57

How does the school normally communicate to parents? Is it via email, or an app? Or just physical letters home with the children?

At this point in the term I wouldn't expect much. For my children's school, we've got a meeting in a couple of weeks. If I felt the need though, I could email and ask for a chat after school sooner than that.

Ireolu · 08/09/2023 18:38

Our school has specific times for each class to meet the teachers. Our time slot for my Y2 DC is next Thursday. The times for each class has been spread over this week and next week.

mamaM0 · 08/09/2023 22:38

Thanks for the replies everyone. Going by the comments this is totally normal then.
The school has had a recent change in Headteacher and is going through a transition period while the new Head makes her mark.
I always feel like I'm late to the party with school stuff and am determined to get a head start this year - starting with establishing a good relationship with DC's teacher - plan is, by the time parents evening comes around I can actually have a meaningful conversation about my child - albeit in 10mins! 😆
Worth a shot!

Communication is usually by letters in book bags, email sometimes dojo.
I messaged her on dojo but got no response.. early days I guess.

I don’t feel the need to meet them personally? My 2 kids both have same teacher this year but if they didn’t I wouldn’t care and met these 2 at parents evening not sure why you need a personal meeting

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/09/2023 22:44

Surely by year 4 you vaguely know who all the teachers are? My dc is Y4 and I could name probably 80% of the staff in the building.

HauntedPencil · 08/09/2023 22:48

The older they get the less interaction you have. I would expect to see them at parents evening with the exception of an issue.

Ours do an hour where you can go in and they do a short introduction to the class and key info.
