DS1 is in year 2 and they are meant to read 4 times a week at home.

My son reads 5 times a week which I class as Monday to Friday.

Somehow it is marked in his book from whatever day to whatever day so the last two entries the staff member has marked him as only 3 reads and therefore no well done sticker, etc.

I am really not bothered by no sticker and DS won't be either as he doesn't see the book but I am annoyed that they are marking him as reading less than they think he should when he is doing more than he has too.

Aaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NAB does he have a reading record that travels between you and school daily?

belgo · 27/02/2008 17:21

can the teacher not count? That would annoy me.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/02/2008 17:24

Yes, BALD.

It just seems they check it when ever and obviously if they did it on Friday and then again on Wed he won't have had 4 reads!

Why not read 7 days, and just read a bit less each day?

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/02/2008 17:29

Don't see why he should. He enjoys reading and it is good for him to read a full story to his dad each night.

I've written a note in his reading record.

Yes, a note in the reading record is a good idea, I didn't want to assume that just because our school has them that all do.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/02/2008 18:25

Another Mum said they had to read 4 times a week, not necessarily read 4 full books every week. Ds tends to most weeks though. I wonder how they mark it when 1 book is read over several nights.....

My note - "I am assuming Ds's reading is counted from Mon-Fri and he usually does 5. Counting them mi d-week doesn't seem fair when he is marked as doing less than he should when he reads every day."

I know it seems really petty but it just feels like yet another example of the school telling us what to do, us doing it and then they go their own way. I am sure DH will not be impressed with my note.

Sorry NAB, but I think this does seem petty. You say that you don't care about the sticker and nor will ds. It just seems something really trivial to be getting upset about. I know you've had other concerns about the reading at your ds's school so I presume this is the culmination of your feelings about that.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/02/2008 18:51

It is nothing to do with my DD.

Obviously you are entitled to your opinion but I am playing fair with making sure he reads at least the required amount of times a week, the least the school can do is acknowledge it.

cant you write in hte reading book every day? does he bring it home every day?
or make your own record and he can keep it in his bag

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/02/2008 19:10

His book comes home every day and I write in it every day. DH has just looked at it and says she is counting reads done in every seven days. The counting is right, it just doesn't work out that he does the 5 reads. He doesn't always readon Friday as it is the weekend and will do it Sat/Sun. Oh well.

Frankly the whole thing sounds a bit silly to me - my dcs are constantly reading something so the school books sometimes go on the backburner particularly if dh is away so time is tight.

My two are quite capable of reading 4 books in one night but then just dip into non fiction for a bit or read joke books - wonder how they would manage to deal with this!

Having a well done sticker for the number of times is madness if it could be one word per day and anyway some children actually have a life outside school and cannot ready that often but do lots when they do read!

nailpolish · 27/02/2008 19:12

NAB what would she say if you spoke to her a bout it? the teacher i mean

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/02/2008 19:14

Have cut the note out of the book.

I do like his teacher but I think she would think I was mad and what does it really matter anyway. I think it was particulary unfair as he had 6 school days off and only brought home 3 books. No way would he have been allowed to bring home 6.

Have spoke to the teacher and made my point that he reads a book every day. She was fine and said it isn't a problem. It is someone else who counts and if it said 0 reads for a period of times she would say something.

OP posts:
OrmIrian · 28/02/2008 17:00

I had the same problem - and TBH I don't read with him every day as I don't have time between the 3 of them. But if you speak to the teacher and explain it will be OK. I think that more than anything they want to know that you are involved.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 28/02/2008 17:48

DH listens to him read every night before DS1 goes to bed. I feel it is a good thing for them to do together as DH isn't home from work until about 6.20 so they get less than an hour with him in the evening.
