Stupidly minor issue but.....

can all your young school-age kids blow their noses? I don't mean wipe their nose, I mean properly blow it.

DD (5) can't and her teacher is making quite a thing of it every time she has a cold, asking me to teach her how to blow it, so she (dd) doesn't have to wipe her runny nose as much.

I completely understand but teaching dd to do it is another issue and I haven't got a clue how to. Have shown her but she can't get the hang of it, either blows a raspberry through her mouth or just breathes out really hard through her nose, doesn't 'blow'. Also, I've personally never been able to do it, I physically don't seem able to, have fairly strange sinuses which might explain why - I can't even blow up a balloon because it causes massive pain through my 'tubes'. Am thinking dd may have inherited some of this and so its expecting too much of her anyway.

It's such a stupidly small thing but I hate being reminded of it every time as if I'm ignoring dd's needs/development in some way - should I try harder or tell the teacher I'm really not bothered and dd will just have to wipe her nose incessantly if need be?

wish I'd not looked at this thread - feeling very queesy now ... seriously!!!

Wow - I was hoping I'd get one reply at least, didn't realise so many people had similar issues!

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try the blowing things with her nose idea, she's always up for a new game anyway. The next time her teacher raises it I'll ask her to teach it if she thinks it's so straightforward - either it'll work or get her off my back for a bit. The teacher is on the 'older' side and dresses very well so maybe it is a snot aversion, never thought of that as it doesn't bother me personally (seeing bogies being eaten freaks me out but thankfully dd spares me that!).

Am also glad I'm not the only adult who can't - I really don't see the point either , a little wipe normally does for me! To think, if I hadn't become a mum I could have gone through life not thinking about how I deal with my nose!

DS2 could blow for england from about 2 years.

DS1 could not blow until he was about 9 - he used to sniff up for some reason (I still have to remind him to blow when he has a cold though).

Whew, hecticmum, was beginning to think I really was a weirdo, I hate the idea of blowing noses, but I don't think I sniff - just wipe.

dd is 4.5 and has just clicked with nose blowing in the last month. I was so happy . Previously she used to sniff when I asked her to blow.

She has suffered on and off with asthma, wheeziness and chest infections and my GP suggested that when she learns to blow her nose these may subside. I hope she is right. My GP suggested that to teach nose blowing take a dry tissue and hold it in front of the child's face near the nose. Ask the child to blow through their nose and make the tissue move. I have to say her method did not work for my dd, but it has worked for other children.
