Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I cannot do this anymore.........

trying to read with my 5yr old, yr1 son, who is not the slightest teensy bit interested in reading, words, letters even and hates school, makes for a very very frustreted mummy, who is trying SOOOOOOOO hard not to yell and scream and shout and tantrum, and would rather beat with sticks (me that is), or even poke my eyes with red-hot needles!!!!

I am trying to be a good mummy.....I reaaly really am, but please.....who needs phonices when c-o-m-e then makes for a word sounding like CUMMEY, he doesn;t get that t-h-e makes the, he thinks it makes Ta-he.......and then we get the word Giant.......which he says with a hard G, and then with an ant on the end......

phonics is PANTS, nothing makes sense, and I don;t want to shout and scream at him anymore, but how the hell else can I get him to 'get it', when the school insist upon them.....???????

ok, rant over, but help please.....or inject my son with the 'click' that he needs to suddenly understand.

Oh, and while your'e at it, please explain to him that telling the teacher that you are 'bored' is not funny.....it is embarrassing to your mummy!

DD critises the art work on all her picture books before she even looks at the words...then she makes up her own story to go with the picture which is inevitably more interesting than the actual words on the page and she starts filling in details to make the story more like the pictures...I don't even talk about "blending" because "the dog is drawn funny and does not look real".
If it wasn't for Peter and Jane I'd have hidden in a wardrobe.

Think DD may tend towards arty.

Bizarrely she writes very well and can write "I love you mummy" in my card but shows no interest in reading it...can I be physcomum6?

ARG!

How old is your dd, Miggsie? mine made me laugh the other night when she refused to read a book from school because she said the boy in it had a head which looked like a speech bubble (she was right actually).

DD is 4 going on 35...she saw a picture and said "they've eaten all the pie" to which I said "are you sure?" and she replied "yes, look mummy they are both sitting in the pie dish, their tummies are fat and there are crumbs everywhere, so they must have eaten it!"

Her friend is mad on space and atronauts and planets so she made me describe what astronauts did etc etc. After I had finished she said "but why would anyone WANT to be an astronaut?"

She said to DH the other morning "don't interrupt, I'm trying to tell you something"

To her nursery assistant she said "I can't talk to you right now I'm concentrating".

After she showed me some artwork I said "very nice" and she said "are you very impressed?"

She loves Peter and Jane as she says the pictures are really good, she hates all the early readers other than Red Nose Readers as the pictures aren't very good. Loves any Lauren Child book though.

She loves Roald Dhal and the Quentin Blake illustrations which is good. I wish early readers had decent artwork, it is no fun being the mother of an art critic.

DH says the pictures are rubbish as well so you can see where she gets it from.

And Jolly Phonics workbook pictures "are for babies really".

And the Jump Ahead reading computer games...cartoons on the computer are ok, but not ok in a book.

Reach for the flash cards!

Miggsie, my dd does a brutal artistic appraisal of any book she reads too! She mostly overlooks the appearance of the ORT characters as she prefers the stories to, say, ladybird books which she finds repetitive and tedious. She brings home from school a good range called Storyworlds which have relatively quite good illustrations. I really do recommend the ORT snapdragons though in terms of illustrations. I don't know what reading level she's on but there was one, I think level 2, which dd adored called The Singing Bird.

ISSY.......

thankyou sooooooooooooo much

got them this morning, and already DS2 is tryng the first book.

i like that they have the sounds and letter blends on the first page, and he shocked me as he knew then all....(me thinks he is playing with mummys mind), altho to get to the reading of the words, he is still sounding them out and getting confused. 'High' is coming out as 'higgy'!!!

he did laugh at the funny rhymes tho, which is encouraging as if he is 'held' when I read the book, then I know he will want to try it.

sooo, many thanks, and I will keep you informed as to how he is doing!

Have you tried Red Nose Readers?
Very funny with good art.

I will try the ORT, art looks like it will pass the DD critique...!

Interestly we were doing Peter and Jane the other day and DD complains "they use this word loads of times!" and I said "It's so you can practise"
Then today she read a few pages straight off and said "oh, I read all that and I don't know how I did it, I just did it"

I nearly ran out and carved a statue!
Quick! Fanfare and fireworks!
