Year 3 end of year results

Wondering if anyone can explain it to me please.
My DD is 8. She's just finishing year 3.

Her report has the following results:

Maths:
Teacher Assessed Level: Greater Depth
Maths standardised score: 132

English:
Teacher Assessed Level in reading: Greater Depth
Reading standardised score: 124
Teacher assessed level in writing: expected
SPaG standardised score: 120
Spelling standardised score: 102

Star reading computer adaptive test:
Scaled score: 1055

(Not a stealth brag, as I know these are good results and my daughter is smart, loves maths and reading, but not keen on writing!). I just want to know what they mean and how do they reach each score. Is a score of 132 in maths 'good', 'very good' or 'bloody brilliant'? And if it's bloody brilliant then should I be encouraging her to do anything... extra?

I did look at a few of the posts already on here and I excitedly followed the link to standards & tests agency, but the scoring only went up to 120 so that can't be what I need to look at.

What are the year 3 scores out of? What's the minimum/ maximum mark available ?

We don't live in a grammar area so luckily i don't have to worry about tutoring! But I would like for her to reach her full potential and don't want to let her down if she is showing signs of being a very able.

We have no idea. There's no set end of Yr 3 tests so you will have to ask the teacher. Noone here will know.

Yr 6 sats are scaled between 80 and 120 with 120 being top which you may be thinking of but this doesn't sound like they have used the same scale.

I wouldn't say you need to do anything extra. Maths and reading sre areas of strength which is fab. Bur e joy the summer holidays. Give work a break, make some memories and have some fun. Look at a sport or an instrument if you want "extra".

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 20/07/2023 23:20

No one here can help as no one know what tests they actually used, if the used a National one such as the NFeR or if the school made their own up.

scores sound fine and I’d leave her be to enjoy learning and school at this point-she is 8! Love of learning and reading for pleasure is all I’d be encouraging right now.

stardust40 · 20/07/2023 23:53

We use NFER tests which produce standardised scores like these but there are others on the market. When it says GD you know they're doing brilliantly!

drunkpeacock · 21/07/2023 00:42

It totally is a stealth brag though, come on!!! 😆

Look she's obviously doing well, you do know what it means because you outlined it in your first post. Stop obsessing about scores, brag about your lovely, smart kid if you want then allow her to be a child and enjoy her summer holiday.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 21/07/2023 02:07

That's about average I would say. My DD is finishing year 3 and her and all but two others, got scores around 120-130 with an assessed level of Greater Depth. My DD is also at Expected Level' for writing! She's not a fan.

VashtaNerada · 21/07/2023 03:16

That’s ridiculous that your school hasn’t told you what the marks are out of! Without knowing that, there’s no point in sharing them with parents. I’d be tempted to email the office and ask.

Primrose2023 · 21/07/2023 03:28

They sound like NFER scores. They are standardised scores. It usually ranges from 70-140. 100 is the expected level ish although sometimes something like 98 could be expected. Anything over 120 is usually greater depth. Great scores though! Maybe your child could do some spelling practice if you wanted to go crazy but it sounds very good to me.

namechangedyetagain · 21/07/2023 05:48

They are brilliant scores. If that were one of my children the only thing "extra" I'd be doing would be to carry on reading a wide variety of books to help with vocab, spelling which will show in their writing. They're Y3. I wouldn't do anything extra, just keep that love of learning going.

strawberryandcreams · 21/07/2023 06:04

Depends what test. Don't go off the mark- it's not a score of 132 out of 135

It's a measured score using a booklet that standardises. She's greater depth. You need to be getting high marks in order to get greater depth. You could speak to your child's teacher instead of asking Mumsnet who don't know which assessment was used? 🤷‍♀️

Explained far better than I could have 😂 exactly this. Anything below 100 is usually classed as working towards.
And over 120 for greater depth

It's a standardised score... 100 is meeting age related expectations so these scores are clearly above average. Would love to know which school has all of their children scoring 120+!

YawnyMcdawny · 21/07/2023 08:17

Thanks for all the responses..

She's my eldest child so I'm not familiar with the world of testing, and I had wrongly assumed that all
Schools would use the same national system. Obviously not!

I will ask the school about their scoring system, but as she only brought her results home yesterday thought I'd check her to see if any anyone could offer advice. Thanks to those who have.

She already does lots of sports and has been asking to play an instrument so I will look into that for next year.

Neither do I! Hence the reason for my original question. And i honestly didn't realise there were different types of assessment and thought it was a standard National thing that I couldn't figure out.

I've done standardised tests with some of my pupils when I worked in a school as a TA. Mostly spelling or comprehension for the lowest 20% in the class.
I was given whichever booklet the teacher wanted me to test the childrn on- would photo copy the correct year group test.
Then I would get the score- eg 30 out of 50 and then I would find the number in the scoring section and it would give me the standardised score. Sorry I realise how basic that sounds. Just my experience.
What I would say is- greater depth is a high score. It means your child is doing very well academically. Don't overthink the overall score

That’s what I thought 😂😂

Standardised scores can be tricky to understand as they aren't "out of" anything. As others have said a standardised score of 100 is what we are looking for. Expected is actually from about 92 - 110.

We use PUMA and PIRA for Maths / Reading assessment. The highest standardised scores this year were around 135. Some standardisation takes into account age, so 40/40 might have a different standardised score for a September / July birthday. Others might just reflect difficulty of test.

The Star reading test is from Accelerated Reader. We give the reading age from this and a 3-figure standardised score but I'm afraid I don't know what yours relates to.

Spelling is presumably the Y3/4 100 High Frequency Words test. We don't standardise this but expected is about 70/100 at the end of Y3.
