Reception report

We got DD's reception school report yesterday and she has achieved working within all of the EYFS goals. Her teacher describes her as a high achiever and exceeding the learning requirements.

Do these reports get shared with the Y1 teachers and do they group children who are working at a greater depth level for KS1 for things such as literacy and numeracy? I just want to ensure that she is being suitably stretched and challenged.

The report will be shared (or at least the current teacher will give a verbal handover).
How your child will be grouped in Year 1 is entirely school dependent. Some schools put children in ability based groups; others use mostly whole class teaching. The latter is often seen as better practice as it allows all children to be stretched.

There is no exceeding for reception now.

Presume you’re not in England or Wales as that would not be in a reception report for England or Wales.

Of course reports are shared though.

Groupings will depend on the school.

@elsieandthepooch

The class teacher described her as a high achiever? Unusual, at my school this would be frowned upon thankfully.

All children should be 'stretched and challenged' or do you think only the more able should?

Don't read too much into a report at this point.
She's just finished reception where learning is through continuous provision.
Her y1 teacher will teach her appropriately - don't get caught up with "working within" and "greater depth". There is no "greater depth" at reception/eyfs.

She doesn't need to be stretched at the beginning of y1 and dc at this stage all develop at different rates so can drop back or surge forward. The teacher will teach her appropriately and once she knows the class the work will be adjusted to suit.

I agree with others that there will be a handover between the YR and Y1 teacher, so the Y1 teacher will know broadly what to expect.

That said, the first school reading book DD brought home in Y1 was a full 10 book bands lower than her last one in YR - so don't expect the system to be perfect...

Each school will have its own approach to teaching the different ability levels, but if the Y1 teacher is good, they will soon work out how best to engage and challenge your DD.
