Do class mates change every year ?

Husband and I are in disagreement ( neither of us are from the U.K. ). Our son is going into reception in September. Our school has two classrooms for each year . My husband seems to think that the school keeps the same classmates throughout primary school . That’s what he experienced growing up in Ireland . Anyway, I asked a friend who has children in the school and they swap classes most years. My husband thinks this is unusual but I think this is the norm ?

Mixed every year at infant school (4 form entry) and mixed every year at junior school (6 form entry). The local secondary schools are anything from 4-10 form entry so it does help them prepare for this. Can’t really imagine them being in the same class of children every year but I guess some schools are very small.

Used to mix in year 2 and 4 but then started doing it every year due to parents crying and complaining over little Jimmy not being with his best mate anymore. It is done for all sorts of reasons, ability, boy/girl heavy, good/bad friendships. Mine were in a 3 form entry school.

DS's school (3 classes) mixes every few years, most of the other schools around here don't do it. DS is about to be split off from his friends again, so I don't love it.

I had the same class through school but my son had a different class mix each year, so I just thought it was as of different areas, different rules...

Neither is unusual these days. Son is starting secondary and he now will have the same form and tutor all the way through. I had the same class but different tutor each year.
