Especially if they are a Harry Potter fan! DD has just finished and she can't find anything to 'get stuck into' the way she did HP.

Any recommendations?

TIA

Land of stories series?

CindersAgain · 06/07/2023 09:26

Katherine Rundell books. The explorer in particular is amazing. They aren’t a series though.

Mugsandplates · 06/07/2023 09:28

DD (11) now enjoying Percy Jackson after HP!

RudsyFarmer · 06/07/2023 09:37

Oooh good recommendations.

I’m reading him classics such as Stig of the Dump, Charlottes Web, The Borrowers, War Horse and he’s reading himself anything from How to Train a Dragon, the Wingfeather series, Tom Gates and a few by Tom Fletcher. There was a great poster up at library that had a winding path of books to follow depending on what genre your child was into. I’ll see if I can find it online.

Another vote for Percy Jackson

BlueChampagne · 06/07/2023 11:15

Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching books
The Dark is Rising series

ImasuckerforaTwirl · 06/07/2023 11:24

My HP fan is currently working his way through some of Terry Pratchett's books. He is a little bit younger though.

Thank you! Some great suggestions; I'll let DD have a look through later 😊

My 10 year old (11 in the Autumn) really enjoys the Wildsmith books by Liz Flanagan.

She's only just discovered the author but thoroughly enjoying what she's read so far so I'm expecting her to try the other series too.

QueenOfThorns · 06/07/2023 12:12

Has she read anything by Michelle Harrison? My DD is on the third in the Pinch of Magic series and is loving them!

QwertyWitch · 06/07/2023 12:16

Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan (everything by him is great!)

Warrior Cats by Erin Hunter

Wings of Fire by Tui Sutherland

MissBolybombom · 06/07/2023 13:42

No magic but still the boarding school element in Malory Towers and St Clare’s series. There’s also the CBBC series of the former, always nice to watch an adaptation after reading.

noscoobydoodle · 06/07/2023 13:43

My DD (just 10) is reading the Bear Grylls Adventure series. She loved HP but has struggled to get into anything since- we have a lot of books half finished!

ladyvivienne · 06/07/2023 13:45

DD is into Murder Most Unladylike Series.

They're excellent!

BlueChampagne · 07/07/2023 12:42

A Series of Unfortunate Events was very popular with DD at that age.

Digletpiglet · 08/07/2023 21:10

My 10yr old has just finished HP (she was addicted to it) but her all time favourite book series is Warrior Cats by Erin Hunter.

kaffkooks · 09/07/2023 21:21

My 10 year old loves the "How to train your dragon" and "Wizard of Once" series which are good children's fantasy. He's also enjoying "The Woebegone Twins" which is more gothic fantasy/murder mystery. The vocabulary in "Woebegine Twins" is harder than the others so he's reading it slowly as he is dyslexic but he's persevering so it must be good.

UsefulSmartPrettyHappy · 11/07/2023 11:10

The Bookshop Girl by Sylvia Bishop
Beswitched by Kate Saunders
Wishyouwas: The Tiny Guardian of Letters. Wishyouwas sort of reminds me of Dobby. That's by Alexandra Page

Land of stories series?

I ended up ordering this and she's loving it so far!

Lots of other ideas too, thanks for all the suggestions.

Lottie Brooks books 1 to 1 million
The House of Tangled Magic Series
The Ali Sparks books- sort of dystopian time travel type theme.
