What year do children start getting graded?

My DD1 will be going into year two next year and I am wondering what year she will start being graded in her report/ from assessments and tests?

Depends entirely what you mean by graded, and then entirely on your school!

Reports/assessments are school specific, so the way your school decides to do it may be different to other's experiences. Often there is a scale of based on "expected standard" for their age, but not all schools do that in a formal way.

FoodFann · 02/07/2023 21:34

Could be from reception, graded as either ‘on track’ or ‘not on track’ for example. Then in year one it might be, ‘sig below’, ‘well below’, ‘working towards,’ ‘exp standard,’ ‘greater depth’. Every school is different. Personally, I would ask to see my child’s assessment data at the end of term 1

Plumbear2 · 03/07/2023 14:23

My child didn't get an actual grade untill he started high school. There really is no need in primary.

Luna02 · 03/07/2023 21:10

yeah reception and year 1 have been expected, below, exceeding.

they are doing assessments at school but we are never told before hand and if we do know they don’t say exactly what they are assessing so you can’t prepare them. I mean I understand they might be checking understanding but in my view assessments are there to make you study an learn so it doesn’t make sense to me. If I was told we are going to be assessing counting in two’s, 5’s and 10’s next week I would make sure she knew that. Then it comes as a complete surprise what you might get at the end of year report. She hasn’t had her report yet and I don’t know what to expect as there’s very little feedback. We want her to do well and my fear is she would fall behind and I don’t even realise.

Shes still so little, she shouldn't be 'studying' or 'revising'. They have SATs in year 2 (although I think this may have stopped now) and year 6.

Needmorelego · 03/07/2023 21:15

My daughter is in Secondary School. She had never been given a “grade” in either primary or secondary. She has been given a “score” (in things such as SATS) or “marks” (ie 10 out of 10 on a spelling tests). School reports are full of the “meeting targets” type stuff.

Needmorelego · 03/07/2023 21:21

@Luna02 I expect from Year 2 she will be given spellings to practice for an end of week test or told the times table test that week will be on the 7 time tables and to practice those but please to not get a 6 year old child to be concerned with “studying”. These should be something like 10 minutes of practice over breakfast. The school will tell you if she is behind in anything.

Luna02 · 03/07/2023 21:59

Yes she has been doing her spellings and reading and maths app. She’s doing well in all of them. Thanks for all the replies, it answered my question of when to expect grades at the report.

If there was any kind of issue you would know about it. Teachers generally don't wait until writing the report to tell you of any problems. No news is good news. Please don't be in hurry for her to be "graded" she has plenty of time in her life for that she is only little just enjoy her and let her enjoy school without the fear of passing tests etc.

kezziecakes · 03/07/2023 22:04

My ds is year 2 and has recently sat SATS - the school does not give out results though, apparently they will just be used to inform the 'exceeding' 'meeting' 'below' targets.

JunipeJuniper · 03/07/2023 22:05

In Y4 you'll get an official multiplication check mark out of 25 (although there's no actual pass mark for it). SATS are in Y6. This was the last year of mandatory Y2 SATS. At my state school, we do termly assessments every year from Y1 on but they go alongside teacher assessments (so if a child aced or failed a test, the quality of their class work could affect the grade I submit). Children don't need to revise but ideally should be constantly practising their year group objectives anyway. Something like Maths Frame is very good for this in maths.

Chickenpastabowl · 03/07/2023 22:11

Mine got expected, below, exceeding until year 9. School deliberately don't give grades till then because they just want them to do their best, not get stressed about academics. It's not been a problem for mine it's highlighted when there has been issues and when yhey needed stretching.

As PP have said you will get marks out of 25 for the year 1 phonics check and the year 4 times table check. However, they do not mean much as in my experience almost all children get full marks on both. My eldest who has quite significant learning difficulties did.

'Almost all' children absolutely do NOT get full marks on the y1 phonics check and the y4 timesctable check.

Zonder · 04/07/2023 07:56

we are never told before hand and if we do know they don’t say exactly what they are assessing so you can’t prepare them.
And this is why they don't tell you. They don't want parents already in year 2 hot housing their children on specific facts.
Focus on reading stories, playing games, building good social skills, eating dinner together, making sure they can do their own shoes etc and the academics will come out of all that.

I just based that on my children. I assumed that if DS1 managed it, most will. He finds school very difficult. He is also an awesome human being.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 04/07/2023 08:01

He is also a bright little button! Good for him! 🥰

This is not accurate info. Our current year 1. Less than 60% have passed their phonics screening.
it’s true that they don’t mean much.
In England we don’t ‘grade’ children until they start their gcse courses. You will be told if they are working towards, At or exceeding year group expectations.
At this age assessments are for school only, to asses knowledge gained in school. We do not expect a 6 year old to ‘study’ for them outside school time.
