School governor resignation

Not sure where best to post this but Primary Ed. seemed logical.

I'm currently a school governor and have been for many years. I've had my fill now. Nothing wrong with the school or how they do what they do, nothing wrong with the governing body - I just want my free time back.
I have absolutely no idea how to write a resignation letter. I did look online but all the templates I can see are those where the person is either retiring in general or finds fault with how things are being run.
I don't just want to say "thanks but I'm off"- I get on well with the chair of governors, and would like to advise them in advance.
Any suggestions of a polite break up letter format?

I would just keep it short and honest!

Brief sentences about how you’ve enjoyed the role and maybe a particular success eg- “It has been wonderful witnessing the School’s expansion to two form entry”

Brief paragraph explaining that the time has come for you to pass the baton and therefore you are giving notice for them to appoint a new governor

Finish by expressing your best wishes for the future of the school

Dear Chair,

I’m writing to inform you that I will be stepping down from my position as governor, effective from XX.

It has been a true pleasure to help the school to thrive over the last X years, especially (whatever big thing).

However now feels the right time to step down and allow others to participate in this way.

I will always wish you and the school the very best of luck.

Yours sincerely,
Toe

@Infusionist exactly this!

Dear CoG

I wish to resign as a governor as from XXX

I have very much enjoyed my time as a governor and it has been a pleasure to see the school thrive over the past few years. However I think now is the time for me to step aside so I can pursue other interests and someone with fresh ideas and perspective can take over.

I wish you and XYZ school all the best for the future

Kind regards

I think have an actual conversation with the people to want to inform and then a short and to the point letter. Thanks for the opportunity, proud of the work that's been done, wish you and the school well.

I’m a professional governance clerk in HE and also a school governor. Personally I’d have a quiet word with the Chair and the Head and explain you are resigning at the end of the school year (are you mid term or could you say you won’t be serving for a further term?)

JoanOgden · 09/06/2023 15:00

As you have a good relationship with the chair I'd write it in your own words. No need for a formal letter. (I am a chair of governors)

Thanks all, definitely think a quick chat to Chair will be worthwhile, and maybe also Head (who works SO hard).

Infusionist and Teen those are great - will pull wording accordingly.
It'll be sort of sad to go, but definitely time to pass the baton as my child has long since left the school.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing, after a good many years as a governor, so I was interested to see this post. My DC have long since left primary, and the youngest is 20. I've already given the heads-up that I won't be there indefinitely. I'm the last of the old guard in a way, and hold some significant roles, but maybe in some ways they'll be glad to see the back of me. That's what I tell myself if the guilt kicks in.
No doubt it's a bigger deal to me than it will be to the school.
