Primary school deferral

Hello,

I applied for my daughters primary school place in January and at the same time asked for a deferral so she would start reception in September 2024 but we still dont have a decision.

She is a summer born baby (end of august) so will turn 4 a day before term starts. According to milestones and targets, she would be ready for school but emotionally I do not believe she is ready to go to school for several reasons.

I've rang the council numerous times and been told twice that she has been deferred and would get a confirmation letter. I didn't get one so rang back up and told there is no decision yet; the panel wont be for a few more weeks, its the schools decision. Rang the school head teacher who said they were happy to defer her based on what I had said. Then had a call a week later from the senco to say she needed assessing at playschool (she goes for 8 hours a week with her brother and they are generally unsupportive towards deferring. They say she is fine and always have done even when she used to hide under the table and cry for half a session).

Still nowhere near getting a decision. I've already told her she wasn't going when they first told me she had been deferred so am worried that to then change this and have to send her to school is going to undo all of the hard work I've put in to improve her confidence and anxiety. I am confident that my request to defer is the right one.

Does anyone have any experience of deferring? Does it normally take this long? Has anyone ever delayed their child starting so they went straight into year 1 instead of reception?

Thank you 😊

Sorry, no experience with this. Hopefully someone will come along more knowledgeable.

But I thought deferring meant you delay their start to reception, not just keeping them back then jumping forward to year 1.
From what I've read (briefly) you will still need to go through the application process again next year.

Thank you for replying.
Yes, deferral does mean starting reception in the following year outside of what is technically their age group. This is what Ive requested and I will need to apply again in January for the following September.

I ask about delaying (although my council use the terms interchangeably) i.e. keeping them off and starting year 1 next year instead, just in case the deferral is declined. There is no legal requirement to attend reception class until she turns 5 which won't be until next September anyway. This is my other option but the school advises against this anyway for all children but I would rather that then send her this year if they wont accept the deferral so I am just wondering if anyone has any experiences of this with their child.

You are probably aware but part -time in reception is an option. That's what my son did- and its a legal right although school may initially tell you otherwise. With respect to going straight into year 1- I believe you would need to do an inyear admission for that. My understanding is the school only have to hold a reception place til the summer term, then they have to start or lose the place. Really rubbish for you waiting so long I hope you get a decision soon.

My dd started in year one for different reasons (were overseas, school starts later there) I just downloaded the curriculum for reception and made sure she knew everything on the target list. In fact she started school in year one far ahead. She attended preschool part time plus an autism programme

I think it can vary massively per local authority. Where are you based? I’m NW and deferred my son and got a very quick decision in support. He starts in F2 in September.
there’s a very helpful Facebook group called Flexible School Admissions for summerborns- definitely worth a look

Did you hear back?

Join Flexible School Admissions for Summer borns on Facebook and post your questions there. Amazing people helping others with deferral issues.

I’ve just deferred my daughter’s school place, she’s a July 2019 baby. Took 2 weeks to hear back from the LA.

Good luck!
