Incorrect spelling by TA

My son's school has open afternoons to look at their work once a term, and I went to one today. I noticed that one piece of work had been marked, alongside a comment of 'Theese are good sentences'. Definitely wasn't his teacher's handwriting, DS said it was a TA who has recently started. I feel like I want to raise it as feedback to the school, as surely teacher comments shouldn't have incorrect spellings on them. Or would that make me look like a complete nightmare parent? DS is in Year 1 and is aware that 'theese' is incorrect.

TAs are paid absolute peanuts. Is she supportive and kind to your son? I wouldn’t raise it, she was probably just writing in haste in the middle of a busy lesson!

narwhalsarereal · 09/05/2023 20:19

Schools have numerous checks on books by SLT, so they will have most likely picked it up already & mentioned it.

As a ta myself, I agree that spelling mistakes from adults are not things you want to see in your child's book, however, just keep in mind the time restraints staff have regarding marking.
It will most likely have been done quickly & whilst a lot is going on in the class. The ta might have been marking whilst keeping an eye on the children, listening out for any issues etc.

Don't be that parent that makes an issue over one spelling mistake. If there are mistakes constantly then that would be different, but for one, just don't bother.

plasticpens · 09/05/2023 20:19

I would imagine it not a spelling mistake but a carelessly written word where she has stuck an extra letter in by mistake.

We all do this sometimes don't we? Like a vintage typo.

So I have no desire to sound argumentative and no, personally, I wouldn’t raise it, but I don’t do this and I don’t know anyone who does.

A carelessly written word where you stick an extra letter in is a misstake, is it not?

sorrynotathome · 09/05/2023 20:22

I know a TA who spells “now” with a k at the beginning.

Fair enough.

Yes, I said that. I just don't believe it's a spelling mistake, just a careless one. I don't think TA doesn't know how to spell the word.

Sometimeswinning · 09/05/2023 20:24

I'm sure the TA will pick it up soon. My spelling is awful. I keep a dictionary hidden in my cupboard or I do the usual and encourage the child to give it a go themselves!

We have enough crap to deal with without parents moaning. Last week I had to teach in class as there was no one else. Trust me, had any parent complained, I would expect my headteacher to have my back.

Dodgeitornot · 09/05/2023 20:24

Lool

Boomboom22 · 09/05/2023 20:26

If it keeps happening with multiple errors say something. The yr6s had spag sats today so it is actually important!

marshmallowsforbreakfast · 09/05/2023 20:26

Sounds like she's just got distracted marking and added an extra letter forgetting she's already written it once she's gone back to finish the task. YABU

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 09/05/2023 20:26

That's a very unusual spelling mistake to make.
I'd agree it's more likely to be careless writing.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 09/05/2023 20:26

Just one mistake? Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. It's a different story if it happens regularly, but just one mistake, I don't really think anything of it.
If the child can read it, then they should be able to suggest it to the TA or whoever made the mistake?
I think It's really petty.

DS has been sent home 2 spellings which aren’t words 😵‍💫 this week ‘faught’, and one 2 years ago so can’t remember what it was. But first time round I was ‘that parent’ and I’m sure they eyerolled me. But I sure eyerolled them too 😄 this time I am just ignoring it.

This is a whole different matter. You are definitely not 'That parent' for bringing this to someone's attention.

Hmm ok, I thought it was a similar issue. I would have thought all people working in a school would be able to spell correctly (and the ‘everyone makes mistakes’ would apply to everyone equally as well). But fair enough!

Dodgeitornot · 09/05/2023 21:11

@MyFaceIsAnAONB Thats really very different. That's a weekly spelling word written wrong, OPs situation is very obviously just a rushed word. OP you're insane if you are going to do anything but ignore this.

Cobfused · 09/05/2023 21:17

Clearly just a rushed mistake probably write 'the' then got distracted and forgot where she was up to. Easily done, infant classrooms are very busy places.

Spacemonkey2016 · 09/05/2023 21:22

Ok I'm glad I asked. I'll relax 😂

I actually queried whether I'd ' spelled the word correctly or spelt the word correctly . I honestly didn't know. Spelled looked wrong written down but spelt to me Is a wheat product.
I googled it in the toilet
Honestly we are paid next to fuck all . In fact I actually actively looking at other schools earlier today , however. I like my school but the pay is absolute BS
So calm the chuff down and realise we all make spelling mistakes sometimes

Well, to be fair, I don't think it's unfair to expect someone teaching kids how to spell, to actually know how to spell themselves, actually! But clearly it's just me.

At least it's not you, with your colourful language, teaching my beloved cherub though. Every cloud, and all that :)

And I wasn't wearing my glasses posting that so pick apart what you like from that post

ButterflyBitch · 09/05/2023 21:37

Im a TA and ive corrected a teacher’s spelling before. We all make mistakes and as my teachers say, that’s ok. So long as you learn from them. I’d probably suggest if it was too many ee’s that it was a typo (what’s the handwritten version of that?) rather than an actual mistake if you see what I mean. I’ve typed things like that before which are easier to catch with the red wiggly lines. Not so easy on paper.

Blueeyedpoggle · 09/05/2023 21:37

Wouldn't bat an eyelid at this to be honest.
