Would appreciate any insight on the school. DD has an offer for y3. She is quite bright I think, quite enjoys learning, not really sporty but will give most things a go.

I'm a bit nervous about the school as even though we liked it, it's such a huge leap into the unknown!

Any insights/comments would be appreciated!

I’ll start off my saying so don’t have children there but I am very local and didn’t choose it. I think it really depends what you’re after and what suits your daughter and you guys as a family! Do you know the expected split of boys/girls? Having the 13+ exit is also much less common for girls so you’d need to think about what the idea may be for secondary as well well most (all?) local girls independents/grammars have 11+ entry?

Swansong124 · 06/05/2023 22:16

….sorry “I don’t have children there”!

RobinHobb · 06/05/2023 23:57

Thank you; yes we've had a look, split was 30/70 girls to boys, planning to do 11+...

Hopeful bump!

We were looking at 4+ entry but didn’t choose it

  • to us it seemed like a traditional boys school which now lets some girls in
  • seemed more geared up for the boys eg the boys play rugby/football and girls play netball
  • It
  • the headmistress implied she will use anything and anyone for the kids - seemed a bit ruthless
  • i wasn’t sure about the 11+ as the boys we met were super focused on the 13+

it just didn’t feel right for our dd even though its objectively a good school

Namechanger355 · 07/05/2023 07:49

oh to add - and this one bothered me a lot - it seemed like only the boys were winning the science and coding competitions

that could be down to numbers and/or there happening to be a really talented boy - but I didn’t see any girls being mentioned

so i would really ask the school what they will do for your daughter

Swansong124 · 07/05/2023 08:37

The split seems similar to when we looked a few years ago and agree with the other poster who said it feels like a boys school with a few girls? If you want the 11+ I would steer clear as it won’t be the priority versus other schools. I also felt it was quite militant in its approach from the head but I know others who really like that for their kids (more the parents of boys!).

Have you thought about Rowan?

RobinHobb · 07/05/2023 09:01

Yeah I'm a bit worried about the imbalance - and also how much support she'll get for the 11+.

I'll keep thinking, but it's a silly thing but I got put off Rowan prep because of the campus - it's got two separate sites for pre prep and prep and I have dd5 and dd7 so I couldn't face a multiple drop off before work....

Had a look at the website - I like the sound of it. Will call them

OP posts:
redrobin75 · 07/05/2023 09:21

@RobinHobb, there are so many options for dd in the area but Rowan consistently is regarded as 1 of the best preps there is. Speak to them about your split site concerns.

RobinHobb · 07/05/2023 09:31

@redrobin75
Thank you. I'll give them a call on Tuesday and start the process off.

We also looked at Felton fleet but my husband was less keen as it's not "academic" enough, but I liked it more I think.

I'll talk to Rowan, see if they even have any space for y1 and y3 entry in September.

I'm just not getting a warm fuzzy feeling about ML that I had about their first pre-prep.

OP posts:
Swansong124 · 07/05/2023 09:43

I would go for Rowan over Feltonfleet every time but I guess it also depends on where you live? Have a look at the 11+ leavers destinations to get an idea - Rowan tends to send more to GHS, probably due to the location the transport there. I’ve only ever heard good things said about it, and from parents with very high expectations 😉.

redrobin75 · 07/05/2023 09:46

@RobinHobb , it will probably be full for Sept but Danes Hill is very strong at the moment due to its new Head.

Namechanger355 · 07/05/2023 09:48

we loved rowans - the sites are a 5 mins walk away if that

it’s a lovely, warm, top prep school specifically designed for girls

the total opposite of ML to be honest! As above ML gave me a really negative feeling for my DD

RobinHobb · 07/05/2023 09:53

Ah ok thank you that's helpful to know about the sites.

They probably will be full for September, but I'll check anyway.

Not sure about Dane's Hill: it seems like a very big school and we definitely prefer the smaller schools.

We are due to go to Feltonfleet for an assessment day, but will do that only if Rowan doesn't have space.

@Swansong124

Sorry I didn't reply - we are moving to Esher so that's why looked at ML

OP posts:
Swansong124 · 07/05/2023 10:14

Fingers crossed on Rowan - they had spaces across many groups this time last year (including year 3) as they took some girls when our last school closed.

RobinHobb · 07/05/2023 13:08

Thank you!

We are also considering Rowan for our daughter, age 8, so these comments are helpful to me. If anyone has any further thoughts in the school please feel free to send me a direct message. RobinHobb good luck finding a school for your daughter also.

Adventurersmum · 24/05/2023 17:51

I have experience at both Rowan and Milbourne.

DD1 went through Rowan, she was happy, however for a private school, it isn't very pushy on the academics. Individually there are some outstanding teachers, but if you are unlucky, you could pass through the school never meeting one of the super star teachers. There have been changes of head, key changes of staff and I don't know anybody that was happy with their final senior school destinations that didn't tutor their child. That said, it has lots to offer across the board and a majority of leavers are happy with their destinations which I think is about what you would expect to hear for a non selective (at pre prep) intake. Typical destinations:
LEH, GHS, St Catherines, Wimbledon High, Putney High, Surbiton High, St Johns (Co-ed), Tormead, St Teresa's, Notre Dame, Manor House, Tiffins Girls and more recently lots of good things being talked about at Claremont (Co-ed). A few girls go off to boarding schools. There is no real 'feeder' pathway to other United Learning schools in my experience. My observation is that the girls that head off to senior schools at the heady heights at the top of the league tables were always destined to and the school has had very little, if any influence on that. Additionally GHS opened up it's intake a few years ago so there are almost twice as many places up for grabs, so more girls going to GHS from Rowan more recently doesn't mean the school is developing more capable girls. It is simply a reflection of a huge increase in available places for 11+ entry at GHS.

DS2 went through the pre prep at Milbourne. The teaching is outstanding. The pastoral is a bit marmite. It does have an old fashioned feel, yet there is always something a bit Harry Potter about the place, which really suits some children. We moved on at the end of Pre Prep. The intake of girls in his year was almost 50:50. There is no significant expansion of the year group at Y3, still two classes, the intake at that point comes from the spaces that open up with the significant minority that leave at the end of Y2 for RGS Guildford, Kings (Wimbledon), St Paul's Boys. It's typical for a few of the girls to leave for LEH & GHS at that point too. One reason the boys might win more competitions is that all of the girls leave at Y6, I can think of possibly one exception in my time at the school. Many boys choose to stay on until Y8. Milbourne is selective at pre prep entry unlike Rowan.

Other girls and Coed preps in the region, Felton Fleet (Coed), Surbiton High, Notre Dame, St Teresa's. Not to be forgotten, Claremont (Co-ed) which is on the up according to everyone I hear speaking about it.

There is a huge amount of choice in the region, I've probably missed off some really lovely schools. Take a look at the Good schools Guide online, visit as many as you can. Somewhere will feel right. There are plenty of options if things don't work out as you would have liked.

Swansong124 · 24/05/2023 19:06

This is really interesting and helpful, thankyou!

RobinHobb · 24/05/2023 19:31

Thank you @Adventurersmum

That's really helpful actually; we pretty much thought the same after visiting both schools; interesting and useful to hear it confirmed. We weren't too impressed with Claremont fan, FF wasn't academic enough, ND catholic, and didn't really consider Danes Hill as we had enough by then!

If they were both boys I'd be sending to ML, as you said the teachers were fantastic. But they were both adamant they preferred rowan to ML so we are going to go there.

Thank you

@Adventurersmum

Can I ask why you moved on from Ml after pre-prep if you don't mind?

OP posts:
Adventurersmum · 24/05/2023 19:51

We moved further out of London.

I see -thank you!

It is defo more girly than Milbourne, just be prepared to lean in heavily for 11+. Milbourne will have them well prepared in good time. With Rowan will need you to embrace tutoring your kids. Milbourne has a richer academic curriculum, they work at a much faster pace than Rowan (possibly due to being selective from the off). There is a broad spectrum of academic ability at Rowan. Hence they pretty much follows the national curriculum (with more support than a state school) and there is time for more extra curricular sport/music/art for those that enjoy those things.

Re two sites, if you are using the breakfast club facility, you will hardly be inconvenienced, they are a few hundred metres apart, five mins on foot, less than a minute in the car (before 8am). If you are arriving at normal school time, the drop and go is in operation, you pull in outside, a staff member opens the car door and the child hops out and goes directly into he school. The prep girls hop out in the same way without a staff member to greet them, there is usually a long queue of traffic waiting to drop and go at both sites, so be prepared for that.

At pick up you must street park (be careful not to upset the neighbours by parking across drives, some work at the school!) and wait in the playground at both sites if collecting at normal time. There are multiple options to stay on later after the normal school day at either site.
