Moving school and best friends

DD is in Reception, albeit the school is by no means perfect she really enjoys it there and she made a best friend pretty quickly.
Unfortunately it looks like we might be moving to the other side of town, thus changing schools. I know she's still only 5 and kids that age make friends very quickly, but I worry how she will take it!
I'm looking for some reassurance. We'd still be able to see her friend from time to time, but not during the week. At the moment she says she misses them even when they go to a different group for phonics!

This is actually probably a good thing if your dc already misses their friend when they do separate group work. And dc will make friends again. It is hard I know. My dd lost her bestie when she moved countries mid reception. They had been friends since age 2 in nursery.

@SamPoodle123 Has your DD cried for long? We had to cancel a playdate yesterday and that was enough to upset my DD. I worry she won't want to go to a new school without her best friend.
She never made any friends in nursery, it's her first real friend :(
I'm almost hoping they will have a fallout at some point soon.

I would focus on building other friendships. It is unhealthy for dc to rely too much on one friendship. My dd never cried when her bestfriend moved. She was bummed like oh I wish she did not have to move! But then she was fine with it. She also had other friends, but we also moved her at the same time mid reception to another school. So kind of similar in that she had to make new friends as well. She was fine. No tears. But I also made it an exciting thing for her, celebrating the fact she is going to a new school, new uniform, new friends etc. So she was excited. You need to be proactive and set up play dates with other dc so your dd gets used to playing with others and gets less attached to her best friend.

I am assuming no SEN?

We moved DC at the end of Yr1 (relocation to new area) and the end of Yr2 (moving to the village school in new area) - long boring story, however, DC honestly was fine - they make friends so quickly at that age.

My DC is now in Yr6 and is going to secondary school in Sept. They are really relaxed about it as 'I have moved school twice before and made lots of new friends'

Honestly, they will be fine.

DD's best friend when she was in Reception moved a similar distance away. After about a year they'd both made other friends and weren't really interested in seeing each other any more. So, unless you are good friends with the friend's parents and would see them anyway, I think you can probably factor in that the friendship will wane away as it's unlikely they will see each other enough to keep it going.
