Out and about in school uniform and people asking where your kids study

Do you find it uncomfortable if a stranger asks you to which school your kids go to? By stranger I mean maybe someone who is not close to you, maybe a parent who you meet at a class somewhere or an event or birthday...someone random who you dont particularly like to share this information with?

Also, I see often parents taking kids to shops or out and about in their school uniforms with the logo on which obviously shows the school they go to.

Is it something private that you should be more careful about or nothing to worry about?

Nothing to worry about.

Nothing to worry about.

You are overthinking this.

Hellocatshome · 29/04/2023 23:41

A.dodgy looking man in a long rain coat and no trousers then worry. A chatty shop assistant or someone making conversation at the bus stop them.its all fine. Just use your judgement as you do for everything else.

Taxitaxiforever · 29/04/2023 23:43

I cannot imagine why that bothers you ! Absolutely nothing wrong with people just making conversation.

UsingChangeofName · 29/04/2023 23:47

Nothing to worry about.

Well in primary they've always got a parent with them out and about, and in secondary they are out with their friends. I wouldn't worry because no one dodgy (and they are luckily really in the minority - most people are good) would ever get the opportunity to approach them alone.

LoveBluey · 30/04/2023 00:19

No it's not a worry as I don't know what harm could result in someone knowing which school they go to. The infant school is very strict about only allowing known adults to collect unless there is a password. I can't imagine random people trying to collect my child because they've seen them wearing their school uniform in Sainsbury's.

You're being weird. Kids get dropped off at school every day in full sight of whoever is nearby. A lot of kids walk to school in their uniform on a daily basis. Yet you think being in a shop is any different?

BendingSpoons · 30/04/2023 07:33

If I meet people out and about locally when I am with my kids, I often ask this. It's a way of making connections e.g. oh our neighbour goes to that school, do you know him? I'll volunteer back where my kids go. I do see the risk but generally it seems to just be curiosity.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 30/04/2023 07:35

Nothing to worry about.

Nothing to worry about. In fact, when my oldest was a toddler I asked at the various groups as parents are best placed to tell you what a school is really like. Once he was in school and I was at groups with my youngest I didn't mind anyone asking.

Do you really think someone go and abduct them?

RoseBucket · 30/04/2023 09:17

Unless it’s a child in care, in a domestic violence situation or possibly a parent in the public eye I wouldn’t say it’s an issue.

ThankYouMama · 30/04/2023 09:18

I experience this regularly, I think it's due to the fact that my sons school uniform is very smart.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it 🙂

carriedout · 30/04/2023 09:22

I don't publicise it and my kids wore non-branded uniform anyway but also in general conversation would not worry about it.

What specifically are you worried about? We teach our kids to worry about stranger danger but statistically the biggest risks to our kids include car accidents, accidents, illnesses, family members, other known people etc.

Hiolok · 30/04/2023 11:51

I'm too shy to ask a stranger this but I'm always craning my neck to make out the school's name on a book bag or sweatshirt! I'm just nosy about where other people's kids go, in the same way I want to know their parents jobs or what street they live in.

universityhelp · 30/04/2023 11:56

I am sometimes nosy when I see children in unusual looking uniform as round here all state schools are the same black polyester blazers, etc and primary schools nearly all polos and sweatshirts. So when I see someone in uniform outside the ordinary I am curious (less so now but when my children were younger).

Well that kind of stereotypical thinking is why there is so many assaults and abuse. It's the "normal" looking ones you have to worry about. Most assaults, rapes, murders, etc are done by "normal" people close to the victim, such as family, friends, etc.

But anyway, no the OP doesn't need to worry and is over-thinking because that vast majority of people (even the dodgy looking ones) are perfectly safe and innocent.

I was being facetious.
