Accelerated reader/ZPD

Hello,

Due to relocation my dc has moved schools. The new school has the accelerated reader programme which is new to both of us. DD has been given a score of 4:8 to 7.8 or similar. I don't really understand why there is such a big range & do I just let them carry on reading books they enjoy reading or should i be giving harder books, I'm not sure what level the books they are currently reading are. I will email the teacher of course but don't expect an answer for a while

How old is your dc? That's a fairly decent zpd. The idea is that books towards the lower end of the zpd are within their comfort zone and the top end up would be books they'd likey need adult support with. They are meant to read across their zpd not just at the top or bottom.

I always give my students their ZPD and their Reading Age
Yes, sometimes there is a wide range - probably because they may have got a couple of difficult questions right
You will get a lot of AR haters and I agree it's not a perfect system but it's better than nothing!
I would encourage mine to choose within their ZPD but not get obsessed with it - sometimes we compromise and they have 2 on the go

@WombatStewForTea age 9, in Yr 4.
So if they bring a book home that's a higher level I should read it with them?

@MumofSpud I don't think she got that, she did say they were pretty impressed with her score but I take these comments with a pinch of salt 😆. She's loved reading & reads a lot, so I just want that to continue tbh.

DD does this scheme. The idea is that sometimes a child will get a book at the top of their range to challenge them, but sometimes can have one they can read easily. E.g. if it's a non fiction book on an unfamiliar topic, a simpler book might suit the child best.
