Second on waiting list for primary school. Hope??

The intake is for 60 children, My 6 year old son already attends the school, so my youngest (due to go to reception) has a sibling in the school.
I just wanted a glimmer of hope and some success stories of when people have been in a similar situation.
having 2 small children in 2 schools is going to be almost impossible. One of them will be late each day and its making me feel sick.
I registered my child and submitted the form. The night before results/allocation day I logged on to make sure I remembered my password to find that my son was no longer on their system. I panicked and sent emails however as it was a Sunday, I knew I wouldn't get a reply until Monday. On the Monday morning I went to the school reception and waited to see if he was on their list, I was almost convinced it was a glitch. To find out he was not on there. He has now been offered a Place in a different school and I don't know how I will cope. I was first on the list and have today found out I have been moved to second place because a parent completely forgot to register and did this only yesterday (also has a sibling in school). Now she has gone ahead of me. I just don't know what to do. please give me some hope.

You should have had a confirmation email to confirm your submission. If you have that, I'd consider an appeal given the system has removed him and you can prove you put that school in first place.

Have you done some digging to figure out what happened? Did you get any confirmation when you first applied - an email, maybe to spam?

Every year some parents do think they have applied when they haven't quite completed the process to the final submit, but technical errors on the LA side do happen occasionally too.

PuttingDownRoots · 26/04/2023 16:05

Just takes someone to go private, another person to move away, or another person to get a higher preference...

RoseslnTheHospital · 26/04/2023 16:05

I'd be appealing using your confirmation email as evidence that you submitted on time.

Separately though, waiting lists can move and 2nd place isn't impossible, given a 60 pupil entry.

Also, can your 6 year old go to a breakfast club, or can you find a childminder to do the school run?

Jodiej2018 · 26/04/2023 17:50

Thank you. I have searched high and low for a confirmation email and can’t see that I got one. Which I totally understand could mean I did something wrong somewhere but for his profile to be completely removed from the Portal seems really odd. I don’t recall getting an email for my older son either but that was a few years ago.
I just wondered if anyone had been thought similar and managed to get in. :(

His profile may have been deleted from the portal if you didn't actually submit the application or if submission didn't go through due to a technical fault. Where I work, due to data protection regulations they cannot hold profile data on the portal unless an application has actually been submitted so it gets wiped after a certain period. They should warn you that will happen though.

I think you've got a chance

toomuchlaundry · 26/04/2023 18:01

Did the place you got offered come through the normal admissions process?

Growlybear83 · 26/04/2023 18:39

I don't think I would panic - there's always a lot of movement between now and September. If you're second on the waiting list then you're highly likely to get a place. My daughter was 20th on the waiting list for admission to her 3 form entry junior school and was offered a place about a month later.

Jodiej2018 · 26/04/2023 23:03

No thy offered it same day but manually. As one of the schools had 4 free places and it was on my list. It’s a lovely school. They both are it’s just going to be tough for them to apart. :(

Yes if something which I don’t ever imagine I’ll find out what, went wrong. I feel like someone should have contacted me. I can’t prove anything. They have the powers I guess. But for him to not be on there and my 6 year old is on there twice is really weird. But I double checked that they hadn’t accidentally given my 6 year old a place in reception. I was hopeful but nothing. :(

I think it really depends on your area. Where we live our very oversubscribed local primary has tons of movement, We’ve had 12 new kids join my year three child’s class since reception - yet there has always been a waiting list. It’s simply that we have a lot of European families who move away or do a year in Italy etc. Indeed we ourselves took the kids out for a year - lost our places then got back In off the waitlist. Waitlists exist for this reason and there is always movement - don’t despair.

Maureen24 · 26/01/2024 22:52

OP did you get a place in the end? I think I’m likely to be in the same experience due to moving and waitlists 😞
