Do Year 2 have Sats this year

Just wondering if Year 2 have Sats this year, as I forgot to ask before term ended. Not that the school has made an issue of Sats for my oldest two, but I usually do look at some Sats papers with them so they know what they look like,

Yes. Our school had a meeting with parents about it a while back. We're doing no prep at home at all though apart from their usual homework. No value to the children at all!

DanceMonster · 05/04/2023 15:54

Mine did them last year so assume they’ll be doing them this year.

Pinkflipflop85 · 05/04/2023 15:55

Yes. This year is the last year that they 'have' to be done in year 2 but I doubt very much that it will be the end of assessments in Year 2!

PatriciaHolm · 05/04/2023 15:55

Yes, in May. This is the last year they will be statutory.

SprinkleRainbow · 05/04/2023 15:57

Yeah they will in May. Our school had a meeting recently about it, they will have introduced papers to the children long before now anyway but you can find some online.

We use a times tables app which is really good prep for them.

I don't actually agree with them but you can't opt out.

Thank you all so much.

I will print out a set of Sats papers next week then, just so he knows what they look like. My dc does not like surprises, so will be much calmer if knowing what they look like and how long they are, as dc struggles with writing.

Yes and apparently my daughter has been doing quite a few practice papers over the last few weeks. By the sounds of it she’s been enjoying the maths ‘challenges’ and talked about a reading booklet but the school has said nothing about them at all. I was quite shocked when I saw how many there were tbh. The logistics must be a complete ball ache to manage as they seem to take them off in small groups and down play it as much as possible but there are still 6-7 papers to get through in the week.

Pinkflipflop85 · 07/04/2023 19:58

The logistics are an absolute nightmare!!

Spelling, grammar, arithmetic, reasoning, reading 1 and reading 2 all done in smaller groups across May!

Then the fun of marking them all and doing all of the data entry afterwards (in multiple places/formats thanks to our MAT)

No wonder why we are not given set dates! Sounds awful. Though, from memory, my older children did them as a whole class so hopefully they will not be too difficult for staff if that is still an option.

Our school sent home two reading papers to be done over the Easter holidays... so that's fun!
Does anyone know if they're meant to answer in full sentences? DD has done really well on the first one, if she's allowed to answer using just key words.

They've also been doing lots of practice tests in school, so when they come to do the real things, it won't feel like anything out of the ordinary.

Pinkflipflop85 · 11/04/2023 08:21

If it's an old sats paper you can download the mark scheme to see what sort of answers are acceptable.

It's a Twinkl one! I did download it and have a look, but still can't decide if full sentences are required or not, she was quite baffled when I suggested full setnences would be better, so assuming it's not something school have told them they should be doing. I will have to ask her teacher after the holidays :)

Pinkflipflop85 · 11/04/2023 10:06

Usually the mark scheme will accept one word/short answers as long as they reference the correct point.

However, some schools will encourage full written answers in sentences as it's good practice for later on.
