Do i change the kids school?

The school's last Ofsted report came back as inadequate. I had already been having problems with the school and considering moving them.

One of my boys has loads of friends at his current school, so doesn't want to change cos of this, he is in year 5 so is it too much pressure in his last year of primary?

My youngest has traits of autism and finds change difficult, his in year 3 and thinks he only has 3 friends (he hasn't) so I worry about him resettling in a new school.

I know education is more important but having to start again in school has a huge impact on a child's learning.

Any thoughts?

Are your kids happy at school? Are they making progress? What made the school inadequate?

HelloNetMums · 28/03/2023 11:59

They are mostly happy, having a few bad weeks at the moment, one is being called names every day, and the school have not been quick to help.

No progress, both their reports are below average and are currently waiting on a referral to the visual processing clinic? The school have said nothing can be put into place until they have a result back. My oldest is allowed an extra 20 seconds to complete work tasks that's all.

Most findings in the report was inadequate, I find the communication terrible, when I go to the office to speak to someone about the name calling they say no one is available. An incident happened last week and they didn't tell me. My youngest has been tested for dyslexia only because my oldest is, his teacher thinks he is getting on well. She threw his well-done certificate in the bin Friday cos he had drew on it.

There are extra lessons after school that they haven't put my kids forward for, when I ask there now full. I asked the teacher to write an example of how to do my son's maths homework and he told me to just Google it. They don't have teaching assistants in the classes just the main teacher. The list can go on.

I wouldn't be happy with this at all. Are there places available in other local schools for the right year groups?

HelloNetMums · 28/03/2023 15:01

I have phoned a few, and only one other local school with places (15 min drive)

Then it depends how much better you think the other school is, and whether you can travel to and from it easily every day.

Dodgeitornot · 28/03/2023 15:06

Well I mean this sort of this happens at a lot of schools, inadequate or not. Even kids with much more severe SEN aren't looked after well, it great you've got some sort of assessment in place.
If your only other option is a 15min drive, is it really an option?

The assessment referral takes a minimum of 8 months.

@HelloNetMums I don't doubt that. I am not trying to make it a race to the bottom, it is disgusting, but where I am in London, that's a common waiting list to see a private EP, let alone one from school.
Look, no one can decide for you, but the reasons you've given for moving them, aren't, to me, enough. It is a huge risk and all your complaints can easily happen at an outstanding school.
Just be careful that you're not inconveniencing yourself for the same end result.

I didn't realise that's a common waiting list, just frustrating they won't help until then, but I understand what you're saying. I've been looking today and all the schools in the area seem to be below standard with Ofsted. Thank you for taking the time to reply is appreciated, so many thoughts go through your head you start to worry if you're doing the right thing.

we have moved address and are now in the boundary of a new primary school. Shall I move my year 4 child who is settled and happy at school to another school. The new primary school class will all feed into the secondary school she will be attending Or shall I keep my daughter at her current school and she will just make new friends in year 7. It is highly likely that the pupils in her current school will not be going to the same secondary school. Advice please.

shinesparklesmile · 06/06/2023 22:22

@DaffyDuck1983 how is the commute? If her current school is still close to your new place you dont need to move her. You may visit the schools in new area to compare them with her current school. But dont worry that she will have no primary school friends in the secondary. My daughter was the only one who had an offer from her senior school and she settled very quickly.

DaffyDuck1983 · 07/06/2023 20:32

Thank you for your response. I think I will leave her at her current school.
