Hi all

After some advice I have a son and still live with my parents I can't afford to have a house of my own yet, we are in catchment area for schools I want, looking online they ask for birth cert, passports utility bills etc which is all fine child benefit I have but I don't pay the council tax it's not in my name my parents pay it so how does that work if they need it for ID? Will they accept anything else as proof of address? Or is that all they will accept, I think my best bet is calling each one to find out, All new to me so any advice is appreciated!

Do you have bank statements showing that as your address?

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 25/03/2023 09:11

Are you not named on the council tax bill? All adults in our house are named on mine… not sure how it works for adult children though.

Are you registered to vote? That's proof you live there.
Child benefit - the letter should have your address on (you can request an updated letter if you moved after first recieving it).
Where I live only one person can have their name on the council tax bill (so ours in my husband's name) so a lot of people can't use this a proof of address.

Child benefit letter? You can explain your situation, you moved in on X date or you have never left and have always lived here. Are you on the electoral register?

@Needmorelego if you are in England then your council department managers are sexist pigs. It used to be the man only because they are the ones working with jobs, from the old rates days. We'll ignore poll tax but council tax should have two named adults on the bill if they are married or living as if married in the usual household set up. In fact where I worked in council tax we were tasked with getting both names on the bill as we could then pursue both for non-payment. All my bills are paperless except water rates which is in one name only, or council tax which has both names on which I have used as proof of address.

If you have a drivers licence that should be accepted.
Child tax credit letter?

Needmorelego · 25/03/2023 09:56

@GlendaTheFish not sexist as such it was just my husband was the one who contacted them when we moved in. If I had done it my name would be the one on there.

GlendaTheFish · 25/03/2023 09:59

@Needmorelego we always ask if they are living alone so they get the 25% single occupier discount, if not then two names go on it. It is a missed opportunity to collect debt further down the line if needed.

Needmorelego · 25/03/2023 10:47

@GlendaTheFish we've asked several times if my name can be added on to be repeatedly told "only one name".
Complete opposite of my poor mother in law when trying to get FIL's name removed from her bill after he died - you think she was asking for the moon to be moved (different council to ours) 😕

I’d say as long as you’re genuinely living there and have no links to another house you’re fine.

I’d make sure you’re on the electoral roll and that your driving license/bank accounts etc. are registered at the house too - none of this should cause an issue if you live there as it should already be done.

People living with parents isn’t unusual, but I understand wanting to avoid being open to a challenge on the validity of the arrangement.
