Year 1 reading

My son is in year one ( just turned 6 )

I think he's a good reader for his age. He's on orange books ( Rising stars Reading Planet ) and purple books ( project X )

His teacher has suggested starting to read chapter books.

Would any other teachers of this age recommend this too? He seems rather young and although he is a good reader it's a chore to get him to read as he thinks it's boring! 🤦🏻‍♀️

By chapter books I imagine they’re talking about the Young Readers style books. Nothing too taxing. When my son’s teacher said the same it was to do with encouraging Greater Depth.

I have a 5 year old DS in year 1. Probably similar reading ability, but no idea what the school would assess at as they use Little Wandle (so reading scheme books have to align with what’s been taught, so no opportunity to progress quicker). Purple on Oxford books is possibly about right though.

We read chapter books one page each at bedtime. It’s tons more exciting than a full story every night, we chat about what we think will happen next and it always surprises me how much he remembers. I thought he’d struggle without the pictures but he’s loving it.

The Usborne Young Readers series is great for this. You can go on their website and see what books match to what level of book band. They do them in big boxes.

Also look at 13 Storey Treehouse, funny books that young boys seem to look. Not much text, lots of funny pictures too.

My son is year 1, still aged 5 and has been on chapter books for a month. I think it is brown coloured. He is 1 of 4 in the class that are on chapter books. It has been a big adjustment moving up to chapter books but the teacher is not putting pressure on it being read in a certain timeframe. It's 300 pages and so far we've had it 2 weeks with another 100 pages to go.

Simple chapter books would increase his stamina. The early readers as suggested above have simple Horrid Henry chapter books etc.

For info, turquoise usually comes between orange and purple bands and contains some tricky sounds for decoding. By purple level the children are usually assumed to have completed their phonics programme.

My son is year one, and whilst they use Little Wandle he's on Whire for the reading bands, and free reads.

Roald Dahl is pretty good, as long as we don't pick the super easy ones. Perhaps try those?

DC at similar stage and is enjoying Orion early readers books, which are broken up into short chapters. I get them from the library and DC reads me a chapter or two every night before bed.

That's wonderful. He should not be relying on pictures and it's good that he is not.
