Y5 teacher can't spell!

I've suspected there was a problem for some time. Every now and then DD will ask "How DO you spell ..... , Mum?" and it turns out the teacher has written her own version of it on the board. The crunch came yesterday when DD returned with her target book with one of her objectives being to work on her "long devision." Definitely an "E" - not a round "I" ! Then today she actually wrote it on the board and DD's friend took great pleasure in asking if she could correct it for her (boy am I glad it was the friend and not DD) and proceeded to rub out and rewrite the entire word, not just the letter! DD also mentioned that the teacher is always making mistakes in basic calculations as well. She relies on the brighter members of the class to point out her mistakes - but where does this leave the rest?

I'm really not sure where to take this. I have actually logged quite a few occurrences, but simply can't believe that someone who has gone through a university training course to enter the teaching profession is apparently in need of remedial spelling and arithmetic. Not only that, but I don't think she even realizes that she has a problem! If she is dyslexic I would sympathize, but I think parents (and indeed children) have a right to know if this is the case.

This legend was on the wall in DD2's nursery (part of the school). "We counted all the buses and taxis that pasted the school". Written by one of the teachers or assistants as the heading to the project!!!!

It does matter

the reason there are teachers who can neither spell nor use the basic principles of grammar correctly is because their own education was poor.

We should not have this continuing though. I don't think anyone should be a teacher or teaching assistant if they cannot spell

I simply don't. No excuses!

and yes I know I've failed to capitalise and punctuate correctly .. but that's a post not a lesson.

SparklyDYSONGothKat · 17/02/2008 12:41

The worse piece of grammer I saw was on the school noticeboard that read 'Last weeks attentance is 97%' Surely it should have been 'was' not 'is'

You hit the nail on the head there, Twiglett!

Another target in DD2's book is to learn how to use apostrophes correctly. I think I'd better teach her myself quickly before the damage is done...though perhaps I'm being unfair and teacher might actually be OK with these. Her record so far does not give me much confidence, though.

bigpantsrule - did you ever bring it up with the head?

BigPantsRule · 18/02/2008 20:15

Not yet - I did wonder whether that might be the best thing to do, though, as all the teacher can do is correct the mistake and then the "management" will be none the wiser...I do think the head ought to know about it (and the other instances), though.

i would just say you are a little concerned cos dd is getting confused and the less bright ones will surely be struggling cos they may not notice the mistakes and then would be trying to work out why the wrong answer is the right answer iyswim.
