Does anyone have any suggestions for books that would be appropriate for a 6.5 year old with a reading age of 12? Need suggestions for books that are appropriate but sufficiently challenging.
No to scary books eg Harry Potter, anything witchy.
Loves animals so anything with that is great. Currently reading how to train your dragon but is getting towards the end of the series and we're trying to line something up.

Non fiction was DS’s choice at a similar stage. Also fiction related to any interests - Olga da Polga or old-fashioned pony stories or football biographies / stories.

How about some adventure stories - mine loved M G Leonard train mysteries (Highland Falcon Thief etc), also The White Giraffe / Dolphin song series by Lauren St John, then all the Tom Taylor books (Gargantis / Malamander...), Dragon City / Dragon legend by Katie Tsang, also Abi Elphinstone books like Sky Song, Crackledawn...

Agree with PP who suggested The Week Junior, my kids have loved it. Also The Hundred Mile an Hour Dog books, very silly and fun.

The Abi Ephinstone Dreamsnatcher trilogy as well as Rimblestar (and all books really).

Eva Ibbotson - the Abominables, Which Witch, the Secret of Platform 13, One Dog and his Boy

Kate diCamillo - the Tale of Desperaux

At that age my good reader was reading Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton - there was a series of Mystery Books .. he then started Harry Potter after that

Also lots of DK non fiction especislly science and history

I'd recommend Dick King-Smith too. Also Swallows and Amazons (and all the spin-offs - lots there). Philip Pullman has done some short stories which are lovely - The Fireworkmaker's Daughter, The Scarecrow and his Servant, and I was a Rat among others. Also the Redwall series by Brian Jacques - lots of those too.

Mine is now y3 but also hates anything witchy and Ioved animal books. She has refused to read any narnia or Harry Potter or the worst witch. She loved five children and it, charlotte’s web, Enid Blyton (particularly St Clares), the less scary Roald Dahl, Rainbow Grey was her absolute favourite last year though. She also writes Amelia fang but we haven’t tried those on account of the vampire thing.

Let her choose. The books she reads don't have to match her reading age- they just have to be what she likes reading.

Just William and Paddington!

What are peoples opinions on Diary of a Wimpy Kid? I have a dd aged 6 and she absolutely loves reading a few pages before bed every night?

If your child likes them, that's the only opinion you need!
