School uniform

Hi,
DS started school last summer and we had enough school uniform to get him through the week without problems. He's growing like a weed, though. I've already bought some new t-shirts for him (they are £15 each) and keep looking at Ebay and Vinted to find used uniform. That tends to mostly be in smaller sizes so it wouldn't fit him. His school's "used school uniform sale" won't be until later in the summer term...
He now needs some new sweatshirts/jackets and they are about £35 each, as well as new jogging bottoms and shorts for PE. So, I'm wondering, how much larger can I go so that stuff lasts a bit longer and he doesn't look like he's wearing a potato sack? 😀
Do they slow down in terms of growing? 😳🤔😁

Not helpful i know but this uniform is really expensive for primary! Ours is £11 a jumper and £8 for the polos. Not private

I'm sure if you ask reception they may have some 2nd hand to buy now l rather than wait for the second hand sale?

Minimochi · 04/03/2023 18:33

Thanks. I know it's expensive but he's at an independent school. On the other hand, I don't need to stress about school shoes or trousers, though. He can wear his normal jeans and trainers. It's just for PE that he needs the full outfit. All other uniform is just tops.
Reception won't have anything. All used uniform gets stored by the PTA and the sale is being organised by them, too. I could possibly contact them, I suppose... Thanks for the idea. 😊

I bought every second size in polo shirts, jackets and shorts, so 4, 6, 8, 10, trousers I bought single sizes up to an 8 then a 10.

Darthwazette · 04/03/2023 18:35

I also buy every second size in the hoe stuff will do 2 years.

Slimjimtobe · 04/03/2023 18:37

I hate logo type primary uniform 🥲
it’s ridiculous - we can just use and plain supermarket uniform and it’s so sensible

Minimochi · 04/03/2023 18:46

We started with UK sizes 7-8 (122-128) and 8-9 (128-134) in the summer, so had quite a few of those. He's now slowly growing out of them and I've organised some 9-10 (134-140).
He's just big for a 6-year-old...or British children are surprisingly small for their age.
We don't have anything like 4, 6, 8, etc.
We have a good choice of school uniform but it has to have the logo on it. Tried polos but he's not fond of them, so we moved to mostly normal t-shirts now. He's also, luckily, not keen on the more fancy jumpers (at £50 a pop), and just likes his school hoodies.
I'll keep going through ebay
Facebook matketplace isn't showing anything at all.

We don't have anything like 4, 6, 8, etc. They might be labelled 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, but what I mean is if you start at 7-8 then there's no need to buy 8-9, just go straight to 9-10. By the time they outgrow one size, two sizes up is only a bit big.

FlounderingFruitcake · 04/03/2023 19:08

Any girls in his class with an older brother? Can you approach the mums and ask to buy anything outgrown? I have an older DD and my younger DS gets all his uniform from DD’s boy classmates.

But as for sizing up tops/jumpers but going the correct size in trousers usually works well for us. Baggy sweatshirts look normal enough but you really don’t want joggers/shorts falling down!

The sizes might be weird, like my DD’s school blouses are size ‘20 inches’. Nothing correlates to anything as helpful as an age!

Minimochi · 04/03/2023 19:19

Thank you. He does have several siblings in his class but since our school uniform isn't boy- or girl-specific, they'll just inherit the uniform. :) They also tend to be smaller than DS, so I would guess their mums will want to hold on to any bigger uniform they've got.
I've managed to find some items up north. Let's see whether they can post them down here, if I ask nicely. (DS's school is part of a bigger trust, with several schools across the country. Uniform is the same at all of them.)

With the blazer DS had a 30 inch then a 34, but that may be too big a gap in smaller sizes, I think that was roughly an age 12 and 14. If they outgrow one size, don't buy what fits right now or they will just outgrow that in no time, buy the size after!

ZebraKid71 · 04/03/2023 19:45

The jumper/cardigan and PE hoody ares the only logo items at my kids school, everything else I buy from sainsburys. For logo stuff I tend to skip a size once they have grown out it. So id get age 4 and when it starts getting small buy age 6 - they tend to last for 2 years that way. I don't know about your area or independents schools but as well as an end of year uniform sale/swap at school6 the local church does a uniform shop throughout the year for our three local primaries and the secondary school where its £1 per item (sometimes I just go and swap things for a bigger size!)

Ridingfree · 04/03/2023 19:55

Originally I read your post as a worried mum who couldn't afford uniform ... but as he's at an independent school I'm not so concerned for you now I'm sure you will find the funds needed

Don't mean to sound mean I just digested your thread initially as a cry for help / advice and I'm assuming it's more of a 'my kid grows so fast' what a pain this is type vibe

I do hope you manage to find the new uniform that you need

Gotcha, yes I do that too, the exception being PE bottoms since they need to stay up!

Minimochi · 04/03/2023 20:07

Well, I think it's a bit of both. He needs other clothes as well but they are easier to get. (Most of his stuff is second hand.) He's at an independent school because we are abroad and his school is bilingual. (English is his first language.) We are also getting a 50% fee subsidy through my employer.
I've now written to the lady offering a bundle through ebay and will contact the PTA to see whether there's anything they've got available at the moment. :)

Our sizes are a bit hit and miss, which makes it a little tricky. They don't seem to just stick to one size...it's a bit odd.
