Does anyone know anything about having to guess the next vowel in a word?
I think it would be under spelling-they'd have to predict which vowel comes next. I can't find this anywhere on the web-has anyone else had to do this please?

Never heard of this - what phonics programme is it?

Is this about digraphs?
So the eeee sound which they probably use the /i:/ symbol for, can use the digraphs <ee> like in ´see’ or <ea> like in ´sea ´.

RWI -I was told that predicting the vowel was the next stage in the spelling? Could be talking about blue level or grey level as that would be the next stage I think.

Really? I did RWI with my own child at home, I don't remember any of this. RWI is a systematic phonics scheme, so it does not encourage guessing.

When you say "vowel," do you mean guessing a vowel :sound: (which sounds a bit strange - if a child is trying to spell a word, obviously they know what the vowel sound it), or do you mean guessing a letter a/e/i/o/u? Something like what Letstake is talking about?

I teach RWI, and can only assume this is about choosing which grapheme (spelling of the sound) to use. It would involve things like knowing that /ay/ is always at the end of a word (unless you've added a suffix on like "played"), /ai/ is in the middle of a word, and /a-e/ is the second to last sound in a word (because the last sound has to go in the middle of the split diagraph).

I would ask the school for clarification if you're not sure what they mean.

Thank you very much for all your help. I spoke to another teacher who said you don't have to predict anything. Don't know what the other teacher was talking about but am not worried as it seems nobody else does either. Thanks a lot and all the best.
