Y5 and Y6 maths workbooks and questions for home suggestions?

Hello! DD is struggling a little with maths lately - always been good and I suspect she just needs a bit more support. We are hoping to get some good workbooks for home that she can do 10 mins a day or so to get a little extra practice in.

Are there any books in particular people recommend? I read something about targeted maths books, but wasn't sure if they are a particular publisher?

Any other relevant ideas welcome, links etc! Many thanks

CGP books are excellent. Concise and syllabus matched.

@Lemonademoney thanks so much! do you use them at home and have you found that they have made a difference to your child's abilities?

I'm also wondering if my idea to do 10 mins workbook a day is the right approach or something else may be more helpful (I can't afford tuition).

I will definitely order some of them!

CGP are very very good.

Schofield and Simms are the best preparation if you have an exam to pass but kids do tend to hate them as they’re quite dry.

We did exactly that. Just 10 minutes a day and saw a huge difference - my eldest went from just above average to only dropping a mark or two in all 3 SAT subject exams. I now do something similar with my younger DC as it worked so well. I feel that I’m more aware of what is required from them so I can talk to them about it too and be more engaged with their learning. Little and often is now my mantra on anything education related 😂

We use CGP and I also have a subscription to The Maths Factor. The Maths Factor is brilliant - literally 5 mins a day and has made my daughter (same age) so much more confident in maths. She's really flying.

I wish they did a Maths Factor for spelling!

Agree that you only need 10 mins at most a day, but every day.

DS used CPG books for Y6 sats - working slowly through them through Yr 6 was perfect preparation for doing really well in the actual tests, then he used them for GCSE's and found them excellent - particularly for maths and science topics and now he has the ones for the A-levels he is doing too.

aww thank you everyone, sounds like these are the way to go! I am wondering if now it's worth doing other subjects as well!? But DD is good at English so not sure if it would help too much.

I will also check out the Maths Factor, thank you @DazzlePaintedBattlePants

Recommend the Usborne Illustrated Maths dictionary for clear and concise reminders. Will cover up to GCSE.

Another vote for CGP

Does their school use the MyMaths website? I found the explanations on it be really clear and helpful for my ds who was struggling with maths

I also like the CGP books. 10 minute books tend to be a mix of topics which is fine for general practice. But you may want the ones that go through topics if needs more actual revision than practice.

CGP are great. There's a study guide too, which is really useful.
And as for getting them in another subjects- why not?!
Quite a few people do that or use Tutors.

BaileysBreakfast · 28/02/2023 19:40

I was going to say CGP are good.

We use khan academy. Great little video tutorial then some exercises to do. Also if DS is struggling on a certain topic we use the oak academy lessons too.
