Year 2 Autumn Report Interpretation

Hi, we’ve had a report for our dd who is in year 2 today - though it’s labelled as where they were at the end of the term last year. It’s in code! Dd got a 2b for Reading and Writing and a 2b+ for maths. There is no key so I have no idea what this means!

We had parents eve this week and teacher said all is good, she’s at the expected level, but it would still be nice to know what the report means! Does anyone here know? If not I’ll ask the teacher when we go back after half term 😊

SATS used to be graded 2a/b/c so it could be that the school have continued with a similar system. So a 2b would be where a child should in theory be at the end of yr 2 and a 2b+ slightly above.
Then again, the school may well have a completely different system! There is no way of knowing unless you ask!

KS1 teacher. My guess:

2b - Year 2 beginning

2b+ - Year 2 beginning +

You might then get Year 2 developing, Year 2 expected, Year 2 beyond/greater depth

Thanks both, I hadn’t realised different schools had different systems, I foolishly thought this would be a nationwide grading system! I’ll ask the teacher when dd goes back to school.

Most schools assess against age related expectations - hence why they use the language beginning, developing, expected and beyond with the year group number.

An 'expected' child would normally track through the year at 'beginning' in Autumn, 'developing' in Spring and then 'expected' in Summer. These are all teacher assessments.

There are only standardised assessment criteria at the end of Reception, Year 2 and Year 6. There are also then standardised assessments in phonics in Year 1 and times tables in Year 4.
