My DS(5, summer born year 1) is on white/lime books.
He’s a pretty fluent reader but getting him to do reading practice is like pulling teeth at the moment. The ones he brings home from school are NOT doing it for him.
Are there fun books of about this level any of you would recommend? I want him to keep reading every day but I really don’t want it to be this much of a battle.
In terms of stories I read to him he likes animals a lot - things like the owl who was afraid of the dark.

We liked things like The Jolley Rogers and Winnie the Witch (there are chapter books for both but aimed at younger children).

My DS liked Horrid Henry and some of the easier Roald Dahl books at that age/stage.
DD loves the rainbow magic series but that one's possibly better for girls.

Both my DS loved factual books at this age, lots of lovely books about animals, fact or fiction type things were just eaten up

At that age DS liked anything modern from Rob Biddulph and Kes Gray. But also old classics from Dr. Seuss and work from Julia Donaldson and Michael Rosen. These are quite good as they're fun, rhythmic and easy to read.

But also books from my childhood like the tiger who came to tea and not now Bernard.

The Rabbit and Bear series is good - very funny (if you like jokes about poo, which 5 year olds seem to!).

Chapter books: Grimwood, The Cat and the King, 13 Storey Treehouse.

I've also had lots of success with non-fiction, e.g. Usborne Eyewitness books.

thank you for all these suggestions! We’ll give them a try.
(Tartifletti I’d never heard of the cat and the king but we love his other books for younger children so will definitely get that one. DS tends not to be keen on the graphic comic style books (treehouse; dogman; bad guys etc) for some reason so will stick to classic text plus pictures. )

Theres a Tony Ross box set that you can get for a tenner or so and has 5/6 books. My son (year 1, summer born, pretty good reader but unsure of level) loves these, especially Fluff the Farting Fish.
