School parking

I had to share this story here
www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/school-bans-cars-gates-parents-26020086
School Street schemes close the road to certain vehicles for short periods during peak drop-off and pick-up times between 8am-8.45am and 2.15pm-3.30pm. School staff put out signs, cones and barriers to stop non-residents driving through the area.

It's many years since I have taken a child to primary school, but I still remember the appalling behaviour by many of the parents in cars.

They do that where I work - not near Manchester. There are two schools along a cul de sac and the one at the end closes the road because of the selfish and dangerous parking. It means we in our school can't get to our car park after 8.30 am (start at 8.45), the council can't access their compound, and residents can't get access to the side street. It's a great idea in principle but the dual carriageway that passes our road is dreadful at school drop off and pick up. People double park in the carriageway and there are little children getting out of cars into the traffic. There is a free car park and an underpass a hundred yards away, but that is just too far for many.

There are a couple schools like that here in Newcastle too but it annoys me that teachers and TAs are spending part of their day putting out parking cones and arguing with parents about it.

Heckythump1 · 24/03/2023 14:46

Wish they'd do this at our school, although I think it would be difficult to implement as we have two entrances on different streets.
People park in the most ridiculous places because 'i'll only be here for a minute' and make it absolutely impossible for pedestrians to cross over.
The school did put cones out on the no park areas for a while, and they worked brilliantly as people couldn't physically park there. But someone complained the council and school were told they weren't allowed to put cones out for some reason or other!

We're in Cardiff and our 'school streets' are monitored by camera during the active hours. If you're not a resident or staff member then it's an automatic £70 fine (reducing to £35 for fast payment) every time you use the street during the active hours.

It's transformed the approach to school and I'm so pleased they did it. Because it's automated and run by the council there's no comeback on the school staff either.

Frankly in such a small catchment more people should be walking anyway.

I wish all Manchester schools had it

Work in a team that deliver these type of schemes - not in any of the cities mentioned. We’ve done one with two separate entrances @Heckythump1.

Can be enforced with cameras if your local authority has powers to enforce moving traffic offences.

Glad to read that people support them, they are well supported in my city, with other schools wanting them.

London here and sounds the same as Cardiff @LittleLegsKeepGoing

Streets are closed between 08.00 and 09.15, then 14.45 and 16.00, monitored by camera with £130 fine (reduced to £65 if you pay quickly, whoop Hmm). The signs look like essays when you come across them, certainly take more than a glimpse to decipher whether you can or can't drive down the road.
