At what age does everyone think a child should know the days of the week and any tips for learning. My partners grandson is 8 and doesn't know them. But should he at this age? Xx

Yes, he should know the days of the week.

However as you are the 'step MIL' tread carefully if you are going to raise this anyone !

From my experience working in schools ( abroad, but don't know if relevant), children are actively taught the days of the week when quite a bit younger than 8, but even without that, pick them up through writing the date and conversation etc.
To tell the truth I 'd suggest that it should be looked into. Not because it's so important to know them, but the fact that he hasn't picked them up spontaneously by 8 could be sign of other difficulties.
I hope I have understood correctly, that he doesn't know the order, rather than the spelling, which would be different.

Yes your right in that he doesn't know the order or how many days are in the week. Being the step MIl I don't want to get too involved and step on any landmines so to speak, but don't want him to fall behind either as kids can be so cruel

I remember primary reception class, age 4. We had to take turns to put up cards with the day of the week, and the name of the month, on a calendar board. My wee friend and I, being Londoners, couldn’t understand why there didn’t seem to be any card with Choosday on it!

Isn't that something you naturally learn at home from the time you're old enough to understand? 'We're going to see Grandma on Sunday'. 'It's Daddy's birthday on Tuesday, let's make a card for him'. 'We're going on holiday on Saturday'. And so on.

My DD at 4 knows her days of the week.

She learns things from one adult/older child, and the other people around her reinforce her learning. Most of it is through songs and/or nursery rhythms.

Though I do admit she started to learn numbers from watching Strictly Come Dancing at about 14 months. Got lots of weird stares when she started shouting out numbers when she saw door numbers from the bus.

Nope.

My DD now chants the days of the week after she decided she doesn't like the nursery rhythms and songs about them. She then knows Monday occurs before Tuesday etc and does different things on say a Monday and on a Friday.

From what I recall, it's in the National Curriculum to know days of the week in year 1, so by age 6.

Margo34 · 19/01/2023 14:09

It's a Y1 national curriculum objective in the UK (age 5-6). But they'll have been introduced to them in EYFS, too.

SBAM · 19/01/2023 14:12

My Y1 has a pretty firm understanding of days of the week and the order they come in and the routine things we do on each day (after school club Monday, swimming lessons Wednesday etc, no school Saturdays and Sundays etc). Months are taking a little longer to grasp.

There was a perky little song they used to sing in nursery class and they always had the date, day (and possibly a symbol for the weather) stuck on the board which I assume the children took turns in putting the signs up.
Does he really not know them or does he sometimes just forget what day of the week it is?
I do that all the time. Last week I was convinced Thursday was Friday and who hasn't jumped out of bed in a panic thinking they are late but it turns out it's Saturday.
I would maybe get him a big calender or something.

Knittingnanny2 · 19/01/2023 14:27

My little grandchildren like the days of the week song to the Adams family tune!

He really doesn't know them. We was all sat down and he was asked the days of the week and he said I don't know. I said its Saturday today what day is it tomorrow and he said Wednesday. I wrote the days of the week down on pieces of paper and asked could he put them in order but had no idea.

Defo in reception

CathedralHugger · 20/01/2023 15:06

I think it's likely he has issues with sequencing. It's common with Dyslexia - does he show any signs of that?

He could do. He struggles with some spellings and is doing phonics but can't do the letters as he says only the sounds x
