Building our own after school club

Hi hopefully this the right place for this thread

Has anyone got any experience of a community build?
Or something like it?
Currently at our school we have a prefab in need of renovation and refurbishment.
This was planned to be used as an after school club provision but due to lack of funds and get up and go, the school aren’t moving anywhere fast.
A lot of the parents work in construction so between us we are aiming to get this done and ready for the school through fundraising and personal work but not really sure where to start.
Anyone got any ideas/helps/tips that they could give us?

The school do have the staff to run it, they're there most days after school doing chess club etc. The main issue the school have is the building, they're not keen to start renovating the building that, before Covid, was going to be used.

We have costings set out, results from a survey asking parents if they would benefit from one, juts need to get it off the ground and presented to the school.

Slightly off topic, but could something like the Shiremoor Adventure Playground work?

How do you know those staff are free, willing and able to run after-school care?! it really is up to the school, not the parents.

Running a chess club for an hour or so doesn't mean they want to run an ASC 5 days a week, especially as it's likely to be until 5.30 / 6pm.

You seem determined to carry on with this project, but if the school don't want to renovate and run an ASC then discussing costings and surveying the parents is pointless because it's not going to happen.

Before blaming the school actually get advice on everything you need to do before you think of actually doing it, have you ever thought maybe it's harder than it looks ans that might be the reason the school hasn't done it?

Maybe call one close to you and ask for the basics?

Running a chess club for a little while after school is vastly different from running an after school club!

Staff maybe around but you’re expecting them to do extra work so they will need paying.

MrWhippersnapper · 07/03/2023 21:02

Who are these staff ? Teachers have contracted hours so that’s a no, TAs or support staff are also already contracted, you can’t just expect them to take on extra work and responsibility.
