"Separate" - the only word I remember from 6 years of primary spelling lists - what's yours?

I still have to look up "separately" though.

In my defence I left primary school 40 years ago.

We did the usual, spelling given on Mondays, writing a sentence for each word, learn the words, tested on Friday, it feels like I should have learnt more. I remember some of the words that were on the lists I learnt, but not how to spell them

My sons didn't learn spellling lists, their spelling better than mine.

Its a bit sad all that work didn't lead to better spelling for me

I never forgot 9 x 7 because my best large bearded malev teacher screamed at mev when I got it wrong. I was new in the school, a very shy kid. Over 40 years later it's the only 'instant' timestable I know without thinking.

My Year 6 teacher said there was no such word/colour as “dun”. I’d read it in Black Beauty. To be fair, it might only used by horsey people.

That reminds me of the English teacher who didn't believe the word 'Miaow' existed. She corrected it to 'Mew'. They're completely different words for completely different sounds.

She never liked any of my descriptions of animal sounds or behaviour. Reckoned that horses couldn't whicker or rats brux, either - and she was most put out by my scathing review of a book that depicted a Manta Ray as a demonic, evil, threatening presence, rather than elegant, graceful giants gliding through the ocean, filtering plankton and doing nothing more than making the world a little bit more beautiful. Didn't appreciate me pointing out that by taking a giant Black Pearl, the 'hero' was therefore the villain of the piece, as he killed a creature that could have been hundreds of years old just for a bit of jewellery, either.

To-get-her!

And two fingers to ever teacher who ever told me to find words in a dictionary. It wasn't until I owned an electronic one that I found the word certain!

Business

"bus in ess"

Cattenberg · 12/01/2023 20:24

I struggled with “business” for ages. B. U. I. S. “Oh dear, it already looks wrong.” Strangely, some of my classmates made exactly the same mistake.

In a Year 7 spelling test, I got every word right except for the last one, “committee”. The teacher said to me, “double M, double T, double E”. I still find that helpful.

Also separate, definite & necessary

Changechangychange · 12/01/2023 21:03

Together. You lost points if you wrote it as two words (to-gether), and I got marked down because there was a small gap between the tail of my g and my e (we were just learning how to join up letters and we hadn’t covered “g”). So tog-ether. Clearly not intended to be two words.

Still annoyed about it 36 years later!

23 years ago, this was the only word I got wrong on my year 6 SATs spelling test.
