In year admissions & waiting lists

Hello,

We are moving areas & ideally want to move dcs to a school in the new area. Our preferred school did have places but due to a ridiculously long house buying saga it now doesn't. It's the closest school so we really would prefer that option. The next closest 2 are also very good but would be a drive due to distance & would make commuting to work less smooth. Should I put the 3 options on the form or just my preferred choice only. How do I get on the waiting list for the preferred school? I'm lucky in that I can stay in my current area until a place becomes available.

Thank you

List all three so you can be considered for those ahead of any others.

I think you list all three, get allocated one and then, once you've started, ask to go on the waiting list of the school you want. Unless another family whose DC are exactly the same age as yours leave the school you really want, you may well end up with DC at different schools. However, depending on the admissions criteria for the school you want, getting one child in could assist your others (if they place siblings ahead of distance for example)

Thank you

If I get one of those choices I don't think I would move them again tbh so wouldn't need the waiting list. I wasn't sure whether to keep them where they are currently until a space does become available at the preferred option.

Are you close enough to do so? How old are the dcs? Does ICS apply?

confusedcentral5 · 09/01/2023 23:01

@LIZS what does ICS mean?

Reception & Yr 3.

I don't have to physically move to the new house until I need to if that makes sense. I bought in that area in preparation for secondaries.

Infant class size , which would apply to your reception child until year 3. If the class/year is full they need to be top of wl and have someone leave to gain a space. Which could take years.

Hersetta427 · 10/01/2023 16:35

Be mindful that even if you list all 3 choices you won't necessarily get offered any of them if they are already full. You can however ask to be placed on the waiting list however it seems you would have the best chance at your preferred school as you are closest to that one which is the deciding criteria when dealing with non sibling applications.

You may get one of your children in and if you do go ahead and start them there - your others then move to the top of the waiting list by having a sibling link.

Also, if you try to wait it out by staying where you are anyone closer would probably be above you on a waiting list so there’s no guarantee you’d get a space at all (there’s also not it you live closer, but that would make it more likely you’d get the space if one came available).

confusedcentral5 · 10/01/2023 16:59

Thank you all. @RachelSq we do live there in that's it's our new house. I just don't physically have to move there as my in-laws have a house we are using near current school whilst we do building work etc.
We do expect to be on the waiting list but fingers x the eldest gets a place first.

You can't use it as your address unless you are actually living there otherwise it is fraud.

LIZS · 10/01/2023 17:33

If there are spaces and no waiting list avtual address won't matter, but for wl it will

confusedcentral5 · 10/01/2023 17:47

@Cliff1975 well I'll be spending weekends there properly soon, currently popping back to check on building progress. It's a bit difficult to be there during an extension!

Maybe I will just keep them at their current school at this rate! 😆

The children need to be resident at the address you use for your application - if there are spaces they will be expect you to take them up within two weeks - they won't keep them open for you until your building works have completed- as then it's obvious the children don't actually live there when you made the application

confusedcentral5 · 10/01/2023 18:47

@Hersetta427 we would be able to take them up, just a longer journey.

hopefully the dusty part will be over with soon!

You will be making a fraudulent application if you apply using the address when you are not living there. Not you, not just weekends but full time including by our children

Not necessarily. It depends on the LA's rules. Some would allow the OP to use her new address before she moves in.
