"Levels" in primary school

I'll post this on here and parenting as I'm not sure where it most fits.

I've just been to DS's open night (year 4, aged 9) and was told that he is currently a level 3c on everything apart from Writing which is a 2a.

I know the level 2a is below where he should be but DS is upset and seems to think that 3c is also far lower than he should be although the teacher said it was fine....

Any ideas?

Hiya,
I hope you dont mind me writing, I am new to mumsnet but thought i'd give it a go. I really wouldn't be concerned about this leveling. There's far too much pressure put on our children as it is. I know I am a only a trainee teacher but we have this kind of stuff drummed into us in uni all the time. If we were all good at everything ,then life would be very dull. You should help your child to focus on the things they are good at and not worry about the writing. This will develop in time.

It is recommended that children in Yr3-4 are at level 3 so you shouldn't worry about it. If you wanted to do some work at home, maybe you could choose a topic your child enjoys and start a project together-this will develop all their skills as you can incorporate reading, drawing, recording ,computer work....etc.

Hope this helps ?!!

Some old threads help explain this, better than I could.
See Feenie's post.
Also, qualitative description.
They are just targets, at end of the day. Most children aren't robots, and won't progress precisely according to the targets, they'll have years when they come on in leaps and bounds and other years when they plateau in ability.
