Any Y6 parents here?

My son is currently in Year 6 and as part of that, they have to take on extra responsibilities and my son is a librarian. He came home today telling me that he misses 2 lunch breaks a week to do these duties, where he puts books away - he obviously eats his lunch first. I just wondered if this is a normal thing that all schools do? It just seems off to me. I said to my son what happens if you're naughty at school, he said you miss your break time. Yet he's done nothing wrong, other than go into year six and now has to miss 2 lunch breaks a week.

Our Y6 have similar jobs which mean missing out on lunch breaks. DS did a play helper role for one term where he and another child helped out the teachers supervising the younger classes in the playground. The following term he did something classroom based that didn't cross over with lunchtime.

Yep, my son runs a maths club

Thanks. I wondered if it was just something my kids school came up with, but must be the norm.

Yep my son is y6 and he helps look after the y3 children if it’s wet play.

I'd forgotten about Y6 jobs, they were really sweet.
Our rotated each half term, so one term you might have to go in early each day and sort out register and another you'd be doing something else.

My younger DC was a lockdown Y6 so missed out on jobs.

Yes - ours have various clubs during lunch time. My DD currently misses 2 lunches a week. It used to be 3 as she was doing a maths booster. I don't mind the clubs but a bit 50/50 about the booster because I feel they should have a proper break from learning, especially if they're giving up so many lunch breaks each week. She's also not behind in maths so it's more about getting all of the children the best chance of best sats results - the school is in the top 3% and are very passionate about achievement. Personally I'd rather she had a lunch break than attend the booster but she didn't seem to mind. She said she's starring another booster in another subject soon. She has to do one after school too!

My DS is Y6. He says they're asked to volunteer for these jobs as they come up. They encourage the ones that haven't had one yet but it's not forced.
Some are during class time ( DS helped with an IT workshop for the infants), others are during break /lunch.
