Has anyone any advice on an independent school for our DS , preferably in norwich itself rather than too far from the city? Are considering Langley prep and Town Close, any information on these or others please? He will be 5 in November. Thanks.

just an idea... the steiner school is growing and worth a look if you are not idealogically opposed... obviously they not so academic-success focussed in the mainstream sense, but they v open to you looking around etc he coud 'do time' in the kindergarden until 6, which is when they start the school proper. Good luck. Huge decision.

have heard good things about langley and town close, both good schools. umm what about the school at the cathedral, forgotten what its called

i used the steiner kindergarten for a while and then took my kids out, so am prob not the best person to ask, but i know others who are happy with it.

there is a private school on ipswich road as well, oh and there is a montessori school as well.

Thanks for this.Yes, Town Close excellent but full for September, visiting Langley on Friday. Have you heard only good about it or anything negative? Can't afford the cathedral one. Its really awkward timing - I want him to go to his local state school but won't find out for ages and meanwhile the private ones will get oversubscribed so may have to register him as a back up.Will check out the others.

Mind if I ask where your kids go now?

Well visited langley prep on Thursday for open morning. Some of the buildings could do with a little tarting up but the main thing was the children seemed happy and busy and the teachers friendly. The outdoor space was great - DS loved the pirate ship in the playground! There were lots of green fields. The parents I met were in some cases doing the same as us, covering their backs in case they don't get their local primary choices, but also keen to see what was better/different. The activities on offer were good. Its small and I think he'd be happy there. They have 16 in reception class but like last year may run 2 reception classes if demand allows.Actually the other parents seemed local too which is good.Did anyone else go?

Pralinegirl - whereabouts in Norwich are you?

threestars · 13/02/2008 00:20

Notre Dame Prep School on Dereham Road is small and lovely. Children are well-behaved, helpful to each other (the older ones go into the younger ones' classes to help organise them for lunch etc, when DS fell over in the playground, an older child took him inside to help wash his hands)
It is Roman Catholic, but they welcome children from all religions. We're C of E, non-church goers and don't feel there's overemphasis on religion. They say a daily prayer and are occasionally taken to a service at the local church, but they learn about other religions too. For children aged 3-11.
The cathedral school is Norwich School, or otherwise known as King Edwards. Not sure at what age they start though, or whether it's mixed, Think it's just mixed at 6th form??

pralinegirl · 15/02/2008 20:04

thanks threestars
Notre Dame was one we hadn't thought of, but its too far from where we live - we hope he'll make some friends in the surrounding villages if he goes somewhere very close and that seemed possible with Langley.

There used to be a really nice prep and pre prep in Norwich called st Christophers ,also what about Taverham Hall (pretty expensive I think).I think that Notwich School starts at 8,why don't you call them and ask who their main feeders are. There is also St Andrews in Aylsham which I have heard good reports of ,although admittedly some time ago.

threestars · 20/02/2008 21:02

St Christophers is still going strong. It's based in Old Catton, so perhaps more on your side of the city? But Langley sounds ideal anyway! It has a good reputation.

pralinegirl · 21/02/2008 19:22

Langley is our first choice having been to the open day, mainly brcause of location and hope that some families will be local to us, which seemed likely from the open day, and for the facilities, after school as well as during school time. We shall see what happens.
