Hi, could any current parents at Salcombe prep in Southgate share whether they are happy with the school? Considering it for DD but not blown away by the leavers destinations currently - Thanks

Friends have children there and seem happy with it.

what leaver destinations are you keen on?

Mallard101 · 29/12/2022 11:08

Thanks. I am new to this so not sure if this is a fair way to compare Independent schools but it seems that the intake into day NLCS, HBS, QEB, Habs, City and Westminster is maybe 5 out of 40 per year.

QEB had 2000 sit the entrance exam so even getting one in is good. If you want NLCS or Habs I’d just go there for prep.

The North London/Herts private school world is fiercely competitive so one into each of these schools isn’t bad at all. DC are at a prep school in Herts and ours have similar results.

if you want more competitive then maybe look at Highgate? Manor Lodge?

Thanks but I’m interested to know more about how happy Salcombe parents are. In particular are their children being challenged to achieve their potential, are the small playgrounds an issue or does the school manage this well? Etc

Yes, the children are definitely challenged. My dc are there and are very happy. The school had use of the sports ground next to the pre-prep where they are taught to play different sports like rugby, netball and football.

On the academic front, the students are learning a year ahead of the national curriculum and the homework timetable is quite packed.

Because the class sizes are small, it means if there are issues with your child's progress, it'll be spotted early on. Hope this helps.

Hi @TwoProngedFork , do you mind if I ask if your DC joined at 4+ or 7+?

TwoProngedFork · 04/01/2023 22:09

We did in-year admission at pre-prep for year 1/2

My husband went from salcombe to Highgate 200 years ago..

It seems as though a lot of pupils are leaving for other independent schools.

Mallard101 · 12/01/2023 08:26

At the 7+ stage do you mean, or at the end of the school (11+)?
