Year one MENTAL MATHS !

Hi can anyone tell me how to improve my dds mental maths skills, we do her homework using the abacus. And counting on her fingers. But some sums like very easy ones like 7 + 3 or 4+ 5 she still delays like it’s very difficult even though we’ve done these plenty of times. Is it matter of just continuing and it will eventually stick.
she can do the doubles up to ten quite easily. But just these pesky easy ones she still gets wrong. Any tips?

also does it make a difference doing a page of a cgp workbook everyday, we’ve been doing the year 1 autumn term one since sept, and although there’s been a slight difference she’s still just below in her autumn report.
we do have minute maths and also we talk about maths related things in real life not just pen and paper.

thank you.

She should learn the number bonds for sums through to ten. What is her school’s approach?

Number blocks has a fun episode for number bonds for 10 which are really important to master for future maths. You could learn the song for that.

A fun game is to use counters to guess what was missing. So, if you start out with 9 counters and she closes her eyes and when she opens them there are only 6, she has to tell you how many you are hiding. Do multiple variations everyday for each number until
she’s mastered that number. Start at 3 (easy) and go until she has all numbers through to mastered 10. Math concepts are best reinforced via physical objects when possible.

Number bonds helps children understand number more fundamentally and is useful for both addition and subtraction.

Am a Ks1/2 teacher(supply) and work with a few schools that seem to use Numbots for lower years. Have no idea about costs if you join on your own though but it is very popular.

Agree with Londongirl83 using counters to play games or matching number card combinations for number bonds.

Numbots!

We paid for a sub (£7 for a year) and it’s made my DS think differently about how to do things in maths.

For whatever reason, it’s what has made the “cheat” ways for doing maths stick (I mean things like accepting a row has 10 in, so counting full rows of 10 in 10s and then adding on the part row - not actual cheating).

DS seems to like it loads, even though it’s repetitive as can be (an actual perk here!).
