Teachers/parents of able children, what kind of texts should a more able, September birthday child be able to read at this point in year 1?

That's like asking how long is a piece of string. You could take a look at Oxford Owl to see what's expected at the start of year 1 and benchmark that against where she is. There are able children who are free readers tackling chapter books in reception.

At least Oxford level 3 (yellow) level but don't get worried if they are behind lots of practice and they will quickly catch up

Have a look at this cdn.oxfordowl.co.uk/2019/07/19/13/52/18/160/OxfordLevelsAndBookBands.png

Yellow band sounds right because it’s the top end of Year 1. DC2 is September born and has always been aligning to the age brackets on the chart, which means she is on the top end of the class. It gets very boring towards end of a year however because she got the same books again and again from the same book band. The class has some books from the next year but a smaller selection. End of year 2 was worse because she was stuck on grey band.

Schools now give out books depending on where they are in phonics. Once a sound has been taught a book with that sound can be given out.

I think end of Yr 1 is Turquoise isn't it, not Yellow? OP, my spring-born DD is on Green band which I think is about average, so I guess September-born kids might well be on Turquoise already. But as a PP said it really varies massively & can't be clearly delineated by age. Friends' DSs have been reading chapter books since Reception! My kid is distinctly more average :-)

Thanks all. I’m actually a teacher but haven’t taught this age for a while and my child’s school use a phonics based scheme that isn’t book banded so it’s hard to compare.
Its a new scheme this year, previously he was about one to two book bands above ‘average’ which I think was age appropriate give he was the oldest in the class. But since switching I haven’t been able to keep track. His class teacher is an ECT and says she doesn’t know where he would sit in a book banded reading level.
Appreciate all your answers!

What scheme is it? Most have very clear expectations on their websites for each year group.
