Moving school can we go on school trip?

We're moving house and therefore moving schools, I've been having a look at the website for the new school and the year group are going on a residential trip in summer term. However the deadline to decide is this week. We won't be moving until February half term. So I haven't spoken to them yet. Do you think they will still let dc on the trip? I don't want them missing out!

Has your dc definitely been accepted at the new school?
I think no one on here can tell you really, you do need to speak to them. It would be a shame for your dc to miss out. If you’re prepared to pay the deposit and the instalments then it shouldn’t be a problem but like I say I’m just a random on Mumsnet!

If your child definitely has a place at new school, then ring the school and tell them that your DC is wanting to go on trip.

CryCeratops · 30/11/2022 16:57

The only way to know for sure would be to talk to the school.

But if you’re not moving until February, do you know whether your DC will definitely be attending that particular school?

At my primary school a girl came back for the residential trip having moved house a couple of months before.
That was in the 80s.

No I haven't spoken to them at all yet, only just found out we're moving and checking out the school think I'm worrying as it's all a bit fast but I don't want dc to miss out. I'll call them I think and see what they say!

Oh sorry @user1471475134 I read it the wrong way around. The residential is a the new school - not old?

The school has places available according to the local authority list, I've never moved schools so no idea what I'm doing!

Is it a state school?

I don’t think state schools can reserve places for long - when we moved schools, we had 2 weeks to accept the place at the new school before the council removed the offer. Which meant our DC had to have physically started at the school within 2 weeks of the school place being offered.
So even if they’ve got places available now, they can’t guarantee that they’ll still have the places available in February.

New families might move into the area in December or January and take up those places.

The space may not be there for a February starter. It is unlikely it would be held open for more than a few weeks even if you applied now. So your enquiry about a summer trip is hypothetical.

Singleandproud · 30/11/2022 17:19

I don't think you'll be able to book a place now before you've even applied to move.

However, you could ask her to be put on a waiting list when she starts, there are often drop outs close to the date due to illness etc.

kellj · 30/11/2022 17:22

Contact them now to reserve a space.

On the other hand, if the school have multiple spare places but know that they have another child joining from February, they might make sure there is an additional place available on the trip; if all those spare places in the class are filled in the meantime, it's unlikely that none of those children would want to go. They might want a deposit but might agree to it being refunded if there is no longer a school place, particularly if one of the new children wants to go.

It's fairly unlikely that they have to finalise exact numbers now, but it's possible that there might be some constraints.

The school will not hold a place for a hypothetical child who might join in February. You could ask to pay for a place but then what happens if you then don't move or can't attend that school? They also won't give your dc a place over others already at the school.

TizerorFizz · 10/12/2022 17:42

In my experience, DC pull out. Get cold feet! Usually they need a minimum to make it worthwhile. However, get the place, then ask. You apply to the local authority for a place. You might find there is a sudden rush of DC, but probably not. Speak to the LA about the process if their web site isn’t clear.
