If anyone is willing to, would you mind posting an example of your current year 1s or year 2s writing? Even if it's an old book but at this time if the year. Obv be honest lol preferably free writing. I'm just trying to get a grasp of expectations and see where my DS is at.

This is from this time last year when DS was in Y1. He got exceeding at the end of the year - I think they assess content only rather than including handwriting?

Best to ask his teacher. Your assessment isn't going to help anyone.
Which phonics scheme is he using? Read Write Inc has a strong focus on writing if done properly. You can get parent resource packs on Amazon.

@Legomania that's really helpful, thank you.
@Redebs I think comparing it with realistic work made by other kids will actually. I've found examples online but they're all exemplary and I just want an example of an average child at this time of the year. His school is failing, almost all the kids in the class are learning English or have SEN. Apparently he's meeting expectations but it's definitely not the expectations of the curriculum as I would probably guess he's about reception level.
I know what to get to support him, I just wanted to compare first.

There will be a huge difference between the start of year 1, start of year 2 and the end of year 2.

There are government official examples which teacher use as basis of assessment at the end if year 2.

@upfucked Yeap, that's why I asked at this time of year. So start of year 1 or start of year 2. I know writing in June or even Jan will look very different. Thanks for the link, I've seen that. That's what I based my assessment of roughly reception on and why I'm worried the school is saying meeting expectations. Not sure who's expectations he's meeting, certainly not the govts.

It's also important to understand that, with the exception of Reception, Y2 and Y6, there is national assessment framework. Schools have to create their own or buy in a scheme. As such, what is "working towards", "expected standard" or "greater depth" will vary school to school and may not be comparable.

Nevermindthesquirrels · 21/11/2022 17:12

@Iamnotthe1 I understand that, hence my thread. Regardless of how they get there, kids are working towards the same assessment targets for end of KS1. So of course there will be anomalies, but by this point in year 2, most kids can write and are actively working towards end of KS1 assessments.

Yes, I was referring to people posted Y1 examples: whether these have been identified as WT, ARE or GD isn't necessarily helpful.

It may be more beneficial to post examples of your son's writing. There are plenty of experienced teachers here who will be able to tell you whether it's on track.

Nevermindthesquirrels · 21/11/2022 17:22

@Iamnotthe1 oh I know it's not on track, 100%. Whether they're on WT, ARE or GD doesn't interest me either, although I appreciate pp was just trying to be helpful.
I really appreciate you're trying to help but unless you have some examples you can upload, I'm not really looking for advice of that nature.

OP, do you have an example of your son’s writing?

Today in phonics (I’m a Y1 teacher) we were writing words with the i-e split digraph. We wrote a sentence with ‘like’. My lows range from unreadable sentences to ‘I like r hows.’ My average children write along the lines of ‘I like school and I like to hav a barth.’ An average Y1 child at this time of year should be writing phonetically correct sentences without support.

Miriam101 · 22/11/2022 13:00

My Yr 1 daughter wrote me a note the other day when I was away that read: "I love you to more than enathing I orlso mis you so much love Miriams'sDD" Legible and phonetically plausible but a long way from the perfect example shared above. Remember this is Mumsnet so if you ask for examples you're going to get depressed!
