HI All,
I have a query - there are two schools in my area one is ofsted done 12 years kinds with outstanding rating .Rating before this was satisfactory.
The other school is good through out .
Which would be better - both are at same distance from my house.

The outstanding one 12 years ago will highly likely be good if inspected today. Choose the one you like best.

Ignore Ofsted and go with what you prefer.

Very likely that both have had a complete change of staff in twelve years! The only way you will know what they are like now is:

Look at their performance figures , based on exam results ( secondary) or SATs (primary) , how do they compare locally and nationally to other similar schools. There should be links to this on their website. How do the schools encourage wider experience, do they have music, drama, sports activities, do they run homework clubs, breakfast clubs, are the children taken on educational visits, do they have connections to the local community.

Ask local parents, but be aware of local and individual prejudice colouring their responses.

Visit both schools at home time , are staff visible speaking to the children/ parents, how do the children seem as they come out of school. Probably more relevant to primary but I know my local secondary has teachers on gate duty who chat to children as they leave and the two way relationships seem both amicable and respectful.

Visit both schools during school time if possible , how do children move around the school, what can you hear as you walk past classrooms, does the school look attractive with current , tidy displays (of childrens work rather than feel good posters), how do staff speak to children/ how do children speak to staff and to each other.

Trust your instincts, it’s a bit like buying a house, you sort of know when the match is good.

You can always ask for a tour of the school. If not you will have to do sleuthing from afar!

BendingSpoons · 19/11/2022 07:06

Is this for junior entry or in year admission? No way of knowing based on the Ofsted. If both are likely to have the place you need, I would ask for a tour. If not, see if they have Christmas fairs coming up and ask around.

lorisparkle · 19/11/2022 07:20

I was looking for a change of school, not in reception or year 7, and had a tour of the school so it should be possible. Have a look round is the best way to get a feel for the school.

OFSTED results are only a snapshot of how good the SLT are at 'talking the talk'. One that is 12 years old is worthless.

If it’s for in year then first of all ensure the school has space. If it does then call and ask for a quick tour around.

I had this and they initially said I'd have to wait until he got a place, but were happy to let me tag onto one of the reception tours ( helped it was the right time of year).

I conduct " in year transfer" tours regularly, how can you expect someone to choose a school without even seeing inside it? Occasionally it might not be me personally but someone will give give you a tour of my school!
