Suggestions for reading - 6 year old

Please can I have suggestions for books or series for a reluctant reader, year 2, 6 year old boy? His reading is on track with expectations but it is a chore to make him read every day and he doesn't seem to get any enjoyment from it. I see friends with children who are glued to books and would love for him to experience this enjoyment of reading as well. Thanks

What sort of other things does he enjoy?

It might be worthwhile looking for some fiction or non-fiction books that tie into his interests.

He likes lego, karate, camping, being outside, trains. Thanks

What worked for me was just getting him interested, so we would look at Pokémon annuals and encyclopaedias and anything with lots of pictures so it seems less wordy and Boring. My son is 9 and loves George's Marvellous Medicine and the likes because of the pic

Lego - you can get books with ideas for builds, we have one called The Lego Ideas Book: You Can Build Anything! that my 5 yr old loves looking at. There’s probably other similar books out there. Plus, there’s books based around Lego Star Wars, Lego superheroes, the Lego movies etc.

I don’t know much about karate or camping, but there are loads of non-fiction books available in shops about nature and the outdoors.

There’s also non-fiction books about trains - Usbourne’s See Inside Trains was a particular favourite of DC1’s when he was about that age. I can think of some fiction books about trains - such as the Thomas and Friends ones - but I’m not sure if they’re aimed at children slightly younger than 6.

We used the library a lot, it’s a good way to test out books to see if they catch your child’s attention before spending money on your own copy.

Phone died mid posting. @CryCeratops the library we do too.

Sometimes we go to The Works (not my favourite shop but DCs love the place) and let him pick out a couple of books he likes.

Mine like to write their own "books" as well and I ask them to read it to me.

Taking tips from others here...

What about dogman or other comic type books?

The 13-storey treehouse book series has been a big hit with mine.

My two enjoyed Horrid Henry, Dirty Bertie and Claude at that age. They are very easy to read, funny and have pictures in to break up the text.
