Year 2 sats help

anightstale · 31/10/2022 13:04

My child seems to be struggling to do his homework this school year. It seems that the step from year 1 to year 2 work in both writing and maths has been a bit of a big one.

What are my options? Should I get him a tutor? If so, where will I find a good one?

I've downloaded an English and Maths paper from last years' sats and there is no way he would pass them.

  1. Do all the papers that you found(you need to explain the tasks and how to manage them). CGP books for y1 and y2. 2. CGP 10 min tests for y1 and y2 for practicing the speed.
  2. Do not forget about NVR (Bond books or maybe smth in the internet).

The opposite of the above. Talk to the school, what's his progress like? Are they putting interventions in place, if so what? Ask them how you can support his learning.

With 2 terms before SATS, there's a lot of the curriculum to cover anyway and he will also develop.

Also don't do all the old papers - if he can't do them, that's not going to help, and the school may use them at a later point and then he will have already seen them (albeit may have forgotten).

And NVR is irrelevant to SATS!

He is yr 2, his SATs results don't matter. If you are worried he is behind them have a chat to his teacher.

UniversalTruth · 31/10/2022 17:41

Why are you concerned about his SATs results? They measure the school not the child.

Agree.

I'm a Y2 teacher and most of my class would not be able to pass the papers either as I have only taught a small amount of the content in them. If you're worried, ask the teacher for your child's specific gaps and work on those. Don't do the past papers though as some schools use these to measure where children are at certain points of the year and if your child has been through one of them with you, it won't identify their gaps accurately. Please don't worry though. As a previous poster said, they measure the school and the teacher, not the child.

Thank you all so much. I feel so much better.

They don’t measure anything and aren’t reported anywhere, even to you. What IS reported as a statutory measure is his teacher assessment, which is measured using a set of objectives and his work in books. The tests are a tiny part of what contributes to that teacher assessment.

incidentally, this is the last year that end of KS1 assessments will be reported like this. Which is another reason to treat it like the assessment your child is given every year - find out what his strengths and weaknesses are and support him in those. That’s it.

School year has only just started. Of course you dc can't do well on yr2 sats paper now, still have months to get ready.

Talk to the teacher.
Homework might be differentiated so he might have a chance to do the easier work.

Did you download the key stage 1 paper which is end if year 2 or did you look at the key stage 2 stats paper which is end of year 6? I ask because in a moment of madness I did this.

Heckythump1 · 10/11/2022 14:40

A friend said she'd bought her child some workbooks to practice for the SATs, I hadn't even thought about this, is this something we should be doing? and practice tests?

MyRiverThee · 10/11/2022 14:47

Definitely don’t worry about SATs results and I wouldn’t spend money on a tutor at his young age. But if he’s struggling, I would get the age appropriate CGP books and do 15 minutes with him a few times a week or just as much as he will happily sit and do. Lots of praise for effort and don’t let it cause stress.
