Lots of phone calls from school

Does anybody else get a lot of phone calls from school about things which could be mentioned at pick up?

I’ve had 3 phones in the last week whilst at work and it’s really disruptive. I obviously have to answer the phone incase my child is sick and needs collecting, but I’m tempted to ignore the call in future. Oh, and it’s always me they call -not dad 😡

These were the calls. The teacher also took ages explaining what happened so each call was 10 mins!!

  • Your child’s eyes hurt, have you had their eyes tested recently?
  • Child has thrown something in the toilet that he wasn’t supposed to.
  • Child has fallen out with another child which ended in a fight. All sorted now and they’ve made up.

I wonder are they building a file on him to back up their suspicion that he has ADD or ADHD for the psychologist. They won't want to write anything in until you know about it as it can be a big shock for a parent seeing a big list of misdemeanours all at once. A parent must see everything that is being sent to a psychologist.
Also did you have a bad reaction to their suggestion of ADHD and are they out to show you where their concerns are coming from.

They may be, but we’re totally on board and it’s clear he has it, so no bad reaction from us.

I had to leave a meeting yesterday that I presenting in to be told my child had ‘thrown a random pair of pants that he’s found on the toilet floor down the toilet’. Not great behaviour, but surely this could have waited until pick up.

It is strange then if you are on board. Could you plan a meeting withe the teacher and the headteacher and after listening to them, chat about how difficult it is taking calls during work. My ds had a lot of issues in school but we only ever got one call home when he split his chin and had to get stitches.

I agree with a previous poster that a home-school book might be the way to go.

I'm a TA, and I wouldn't phone a parent for any of the reasons you've listed. The only exception might be if I knew I wouldn't see the parent at the end of the day (friend picking up/after school club etc). I've only phoned one parent this term, which was when their child didn't have lunch. Previously I've called if the child needed to go home due to illness, or occationally for big head bumps just to let the parent know, and to give them the option to collect if they wanted to - for most minor head bumps we just send a form home. I've also called a few times to discuss an ongoing medical issue, and to sort out logistics about piano lessons, permission for a trip that day, or whether or not a child is going to a club - basically only things that can't wait until the end of the day.

Home school book sounds good. Also it’s good to know that you wouldn’t call about any of the things I’ve mentioned. I did wonder if I was being a bit sensitive. After the last call, I did suggest that the conversation could have waited until pick up, so I think she’s got the message.

How can the teacher have time to have a quick word with all the parents who want a quick word? I think the teacher is actually being very proactive and helpful by calling. It is no doubt taking a lot of time out of her day to make all these calls.

Well, only about 15 children get picked up- the rest go to after school club. And we have a 15 minute window to collect, so sometimes I don’t even see another parent at pickup.
