Reading book recommendations for Yr1 child

DD is in Yr1 and is a capable reader. Her teacher has pulled her out of the class phonics classes to do assessments of her reading and other abilities and give her stretch work. Personally I think she's smart rather than 'gifted' but will leave the teacher to it. Anyway, DD can easily read chapter books like Isadora Moon etc but finds them quite dull. She loves Roald Dahl and has read some (e.g. "The giraffe, the pelly and me") independently, some taking turns with me. I don't know that she would fully 'get' the longer ones on her own and certainly parts would be too scary for her. She is quite a young Yr1, as she's summer-born, and she gets very upset by anything slightly tense or scary. She also loves non-fiction books about nature, evolution and science. All by way of background.

I always try to get her appropriate early reader books from the library as I think it's a good discipline for her to read them to me and talk about the questions afterwards to make sure she fully understands what she reads. We've worked through all the Reading Champion books at the local library up to level 13/14. But we've exhausted those now. Can anyone recommend other books which will help develop her reading skills but would be age-appropriate? I don't want to rush her into longer books but rather focus on understanding nuances etc.

Jasper and Scruff, Rabbit and Bear, Claude - all go down well with my 5yo, though she's not reading them independently yet

Walker books do a great collection of first “chapter book” type books but are very simple - my child read them all herself early in year 1. She also loved Rabbit and Bear (which is funny - great for talking about how the writer chooses words to make it funny), flat Stanley, Ursula bear (bit easier I think), the owl who was afraid of the dark and other stories by Jill Tomlinson. Ramona quimby books are good at this stage too; you can alternate (you read two, she reads one page etc) or my naughty little sister and so on.
13 Storey Treehouse collection and the Mr Gum series are great to move on to.

Oh and Claude the Dog by Alex t smith - funny, some challenging vocab but short pages. Then on to Ottoline by Chris Riddell.

It really depends what she's into. We're reading my 4.5YO 'The naughtiest unicorn' and I've just ordered the 'faraway tree' series for her. She's not crazy keen on Roald Dahl just yet as like your's she's a tad sensitive. I'm sure as her sense of humour matures though they will be a favourite. Have you thought about getting library membership and just letting her choose a couple of new books every week or so? X

Hi @Cheeseandcrackers86 - we go to the library most weeks! We always get a combination of levelled reading books, non-fiction (usually nature/science) and general fiction, but we are exhausting the books aimed at her age group and it's often tricky (I find) to find good quality story books which are at the right level.
