My son is in reception and at lunch ALL kids from reception to year 6 share one big playground

A few ppl have said that theirs has their own reception playground and others have said years reception 1 and 2 share then 3-6 share

He has an outside are for free play when not in the classroom but for actual 1 hour lunch break it's all kids sharing R-6

Depends on the size of the school I guess. Our DD was in a separate reception playground but it's a 90 pupil entry

theresnouseingrumpin · 26/09/2022 19:06

Entry is 90 pupils per year group so 3 class of 30 in each year

All children use the playground at the same time in our school but it's a tiny village primary school (sub 50 pupils) - all the kids play together.

PuttingDownRoots · 26/09/2022 19:08

DDs were o the main playground at break from 4yo. I was reliably informed that several of the yr5 boys were scared of DD2 and her friends after they gave them a telling off for pushing on the climbing frame. 😂

Their current school... its mixed but different year groups have access to things like the trim trail and basketball nets each day so there's fair usage. The yr6s also organise games for the little ones

Morph22010 · 26/09/2022 19:09

At my sons primary there was approx 600 kids and they had a playground for reception, one for key stage one, one for years 3 to 5 and then a seperate area for year 6

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/09/2022 19:10

The school Nursery and Reception share a completely separate yard (free flow so they move indoor outdoor at leisure).

Then the playground is split on two levels- Y1 and Y2 use the smaller area, Y3-Y6 use the top. However at lunch they only have a small dining room so the lunches are staggered and so fewer kids on the yard at once.

PeekAtYou · 26/09/2022 19:13

School 1: A separate Reception playground but in the summer term, Reception children mix with the rest of the kids.

School 2: A Reception playground, y1/2 playground and a y3-6 playground

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 26/09/2022 19:13

nursery have their own garden.
Reception have their own garden.
yr 1 and 2 play in one area of the large L shaped playground, year 3 to 6 play in another part of the playground
This is a 2 form entry primary in London

Queuesarasarah · 26/09/2022 19:20

Separate reception playground used during most of the day but usually lunchtime play is shared with older children due to staffing. Wouldn’t normally be R-6 at one time though due to staggered lunches.

ItsJustASimpleLine · 26/09/2022 19:21

DS just started and it's 60 entry. All year groups together, they trialled it last year and it worked well so they're continuing.

My DD is in Yr 4 and she plays with kids in all year groups as she's not keen on the games the girls in her year play so she loves it. I also have nieces and close family friends kids scattered through the year groups and they all mix really well and love seeing each other over the day.

My DS when in nursery would have to wait for DD at school and made friends with 2 boys in yr 1 (now year 2) over 10min a day play and they play togerher now hes in school.

Honestly I was a bit surprised with the shift last year but it's lovely how well mixed the kids are and they all can find someone to play with rather then being stuck with just classmates or year groups.

ZebraKid71 · 26/09/2022 19:23

90 kids a year and they are all in one playground?! That sounds intense.

Ours is 2 form entry, 45 kids a year and nursery and reception share, year 1-2 share and years 3-6 share but there's is more staggered.

Chocoholic900 · 26/09/2022 19:27

Reception and Year 1 have an outdoor space that is linked to their classrooms to do free-flow during the day.
At break & lunch everyone out on the main playground together.

minipie · 26/09/2022 19:32

Reception have their own playground area but they also have lunch earlier so once they’ve gone inside, the rest of the school can use their area.

Whinge · 26/09/2022 19:40

So there's 90 children per year, and it's reception to year 6?

Have you checked with the school staff that they're all outside together? That's a huge amount of children in the same playground. It also sounds like a massive logistical nightmare, as if they're playing at the same time then surely they're also eating at the same time. Smile

Spacemonkey2016 · 26/09/2022 19:48

Ours is only a two form entry infant school, so 180 kids. But they all share the same playground, they just have a rota system for the climing frames/slide and football pitch.

Hulahoops78 · 27/09/2022 08:27

Our school has a separate Reception / Y1 playground. The break times are also staggered with KS1 and KS2. Ours is a 2 form intake. The grounds aren't huge.

Heckythump1 · 27/09/2022 10:07

Ours are all in together and it's lovely... I'm so glad it's back like that after being in seperate little bubble areas over covid!
So lovely for them to get to know children of all different ages!

SleepingStandingUp · 27/09/2022 10:11

One form entry so about 200 kids. Nursery and reception share a fun play area which they use at different times so Reception have it for lunch. Then everything was partitioned off cos of Covid in year 1. He's in year 3 now and I think they're just going back to sharing year1-6

BendingSpoons · 27/09/2022 18:23

Infant school, so up to year 2. Currently Reception are separate but they will join yr1 and 2 later on in the year.

modgepodge · 27/09/2022 18:30

90 kids x 7 year groups = 630 kids on one playground at once. This must be the worlds biggest playground with huge numbers of staff on duty?!?

are you sure it’s like this OP?

MissRainbowBrite · 27/09/2022 18:38

That sounds a lot, 90x7 year groups equals about 630 kids in one area. That's an awful lot to staff and look after in one area, it must be enormous.

theresnouseingrumpin · 27/09/2022 18:42

I might be wrong I'll check but also to note is that reception go to lunch half an hour before the other years....

Interesting playground set up for DSs that I didn't realise until DS1 started school.

DS' school is two form entry. The playgrounds wrap around the school and each playground is separated gates. The doors to the classrooms lead out into the appropriate playgrounds.

  • Nursery (2-4 year olds) have their own playground
  • Reception have theirs, which they share with the older Nursery class (3-4 year olds) on some days.
  • Year 1 have their own playground but their gates open out to Reception or Year 2, depending on the days but both gates are never open at the same time.
-Year 2 have their own playground (the biggest) that they share with year 1 some days.

Years 3-6 share a massive playground that has fields and courts etc.

justanothermanicmonday21 · 28/09/2022 00:49

Our is a 3 form entry per year, reception have their own playground, infants year 1 and 2 have their own and the junior have their own, they also slightly stagger lunchtimes. All share the field in summer
