Is it OK to read our own books?

DS just started year 1 and is at a new school. Last week we got a very short book along with a letter saying they were assessing reading and would assign proper reading bands/books soon, but wanted the children to get in the habit of reading daily from the start. The book hasn't been changed yet, so w've read it 4 times and can't drum up enthusiasm for another rendition of it.

Last night me and DS did alternative pages of a book we had at home, which he enjoyed much more. Is it OK to put that in the reading diary, or would it be disapproved of? Would it be better to just leave it blank and pretend we missed a night?

With youngest dc it was a complete battleground. He could read well before starting school and flatly refused to engage with reading the designated school books at home. I gave up filling in the diary after year 1, and we just read whatever took his interest from the library and older dc’s book collections. I did let the teachers know, they weren’t particularly happy but 🤷‍♀️

Struggling with this here too. DD has just gone into Yr 1. She's a pretty decent reader, and enjoys books in general. She came out with a book on day 1, which she had read in about her first month of reception. We read it a couple of times but obviously it's not hugely engaging for her! She hasn't had this book changed since (we are now onto week 3!) The school have an online reading log, which I've updated daily, including the books she has read from the library, but the school haven't inputted at all, or acknowledged it.

Am feeling a little worried she is going to get forgotten about. Obviously she reads to me daily, we choose varied books from the library etc, but school don't seem to even have any idea of her reading level.

@sipper DD in Yr 1 still hasn't even had a reading book 3 weeks in so it could be worse!!

My DD (year 2) has got to the level where it takes her more than one day to finish the book but they only swap twice a week so can't fit in reading it twice. Reading half is just silly so if we have days left she reads a few pages from another book, teacher hasn't complained yet.

The book has now been changed a couple of times, but are still quite far below the level he was getting last year. We've compromise by reading school book on alternate days and our own book in between. The books he chooses are probably a little hard for him, so usually he just does either the first line of each page, or alternative pages, and I read the rest to keep the plot moving.
