Hi, my dd has always been behind due to speech delay and i feel she is catching up. I was wondering what other reception children can do.
For example, could you tell me if they do the following:
write their name
fasten and unfasten buttons
simple sums
know/write all the alphabet
count to 100
reognise all numbers to 100
read about 15 words
cut out shapes

what else can they do?

I do not want this turning into a competition thread. I am purely asking so i can guage how dd is doing.

hi

My dd is 4.5 she can:

dress and undress herself including all buttons

write her name and her own "news" on a monday morning

write all small and capital letters

count to 100 and recognise all numbers

add and take away numbers up to 20

reading Ginn level 4 , Peter and Jane level 6

Your dd sounds to be doing fine.

DS is 5 - he can do all the above; simple sums are coming along (he is better at language/reading) and his cutting is a bit hit n miss whether he goes to the lines or not - he has issues with holding scissors though.

Oh and fastening buttons takes a while but he is determined to do it!

His numbers to 100 are recognised but not immediately; he will say "five and seven - fifty seven" or whatever but not just come out with fifty seven IYSWIM.

I hope that helped and I don't sound bolshy - I didn't mean to!

Umm, I think I just replied and it vanished...

Here's how mine shaped up in the first term or so:

Write name: dd yes, ds2 yes but backwards, ds2 bits of it (very short name!)

Buttons: dd yes, ds1 sometimes, ds2 no

Sums: dd no (maybe 'one more than'), ds1 yes, ds2 dunno

alphabet: dd mostly, ds1 yes, ds2 the odd letter; all three mixed up b, d, p, q for years

count: errm, maybe to 10, or 20, missing out 16

recognise numbers: dd up to 10, ds1 a few, ds2 no

read: dd her own name and Mummy, ds1 quite a lot, ds2 animal words only!

cutting out: dd easily, ds1 if he chose to, ds2 god, no, don't let him near the scissors...

There can be a huge, indeed vast, difference between chidren in reception. FWIW I think that your dd is well int he normal spectrum.

Far less difference by Year 2 ime.

DD1 was 4 on 29th August so only just made it into reception. She can
Write her name, badly, but she can do it.
Fasten & unfasten buttons
Simple sums,ie 4+3 or 7-2
I'm not sure about the alphabet as they don't seem to recite it,but knows all her phonics & can recognise each letter.
Count to 50
I'm not sure about numbers up to 100,definatesly up to 10 & backwards too.
Reads very well, but we have been told she is an exceptionally good reader.
I'm not sure she'd be good at cutting out shapes,as her dexterity isn't that great-it's something we are working on with her.

She has a fantastic memory & only has to see something or be told something once to remember it.She informed me the other night that sharks don't have bones, they have cartilige instead. She can speak a little simple French,as they teach it in Reception at her school.

In short, she is good at most cerebral things, but not so good at pencil control.
